Girl Meets Valentine's Day [lucaya fanfic]

Chapter 3: After School

Riley's POV

I can't believe that Maya likes Lucas.

It's been a week since she told me. We agreed to always put best friends before boyfriends. I wonder if that means saying no if Lucas asks me. I hope not. He likes me, I know that, but I'm not sure if he likes me or like-likes me. You know what I mean?

The bell rings, and I snap into real life.

"Time to hand in your forms, everyone!" Dad, oops, I mean Mr. Matthews says. Lucas walks past me and plops his paper on the desk. So do Maya, Farkle, Sarah, Darby, Billy.... everyone is going to the dance. I place my paper in my dad's hands and start to pack up my books.

"It's friday, Maya! You are coming to my house," I sing. She's still packing up.

"You go on ahead. I have to talk to Mr. Matthews about something," she replies.

"Oh, the test, right?" my dad asks. "I have to grab it from the teachers' lounge, but I'll be back in 10 minutes, okay?"

"Okay," she says, shrugging. "I'll just wait here."

"I can wait with you," Lucas volenteers. "My mom is running late to pick me up, so I'll have to stick around here for a while anyway."

Maya looks at me, worriedly. "Do you want to stay too, Riley?" she asks.

"No, it's okay," I reply. "I'll get your stuff from your locker too, and I'll meet you out front."

As I walk down the halls, thoughts start whirring through my head. Why did Maya seem worried? Why did Lucas stay with her- they always seem to be arguing over something. And when is he going to ask me to the dance?

I realize I left my jacket on my desk, so I head back to the classroom to get it. The halls seem so weird after school, and the only person I see is Harley Keiner, the school janitor.

When I get to the classroom, I hear voices from inside.

One, which I instantly recognize as Maya's, exclaims, "I can't do that to Riley!"

Do what to Riley? Who's doing something to me?

"But Maya, I really like you. And I was really hoping you liked me too," another voice says.

My heart stops. It's Lucas.
