Kirsten's POV

I had been lying awake in bed for the past three hours, tossing and tumbling, endlessly waiting for the clock to strike six so I can get dressed and take my first day of senior year by a storm.

The sun was already up and I could hear mum's flipflops clattering against the hardwood floors, the low grumble of dad's voice as he answers calls, the loud thump of a door being slammed as Michael zooms between rooms the way he does so each morning.

After contemplating for 5 more seconds on what I should wear, I decided to pull myself out of bed, a little dizzy but oh so ready for school.

I showered and got dressed, sped downstairs, put on my best smile and holler a somewhat cheery good morning to everyone.
"Good morning sweetie, did you sleep well?" mum asked in her usual monotone. "yea, it was fine" I tried my best to not complain.
"Here's a smoothie I ma-" "Moooooommmmmmmmmmmm" Michael interrupted her "I can't find my blue stan lee shirt, it's my first day I have to wear it" he whined.

Mum hurried out of the kitchen to sort out Michaels worries. Michael Braverman is my 9yr old brother whom I would describe as rather annoying, always late, and with a frantic obsession for comic books. Hey, don't hate on me, younger siblings can get quite annoying.

Amidst all this morning chaos, Dad was done with his everyday rituals and phone calls and was already off to work.
I stood near the kitchen counter, chugged my glass of coarse-textured, smelly and sorta rancid smoothie which made me gag a little and quickly headed out. Mother's love, eh.

**
As I drove through the gates of the school, a flurry of hey's and Hi's flew past, I responded with equal enthusiasm while slowly driving into the parking lot.
As I exited my cute VW beetle, Natalie pulled into the lot next to me and I got almost knocked over.

Natalie is a petite Lil girl, born and bred British, who moved to the states at the beginning of highschool post her parents divorce. During freshman year, I saw her sulking in the cafeteria in and offered her a cookie, she thanked me and asked if she could exchange the cookie for friendship, and the rest is history.

She jumped out of her car, one too big for her frame hugs me a little tooooo tightly knocking the air out of my lungs and all but yells "I missed you sooooooo muchh Kiri, that's it, we are seniors now and you missy are gonna do the hokey pokey with the first guy you fancy"
"Geez, woman! Slow down, will you? I missed you too and no, my love life doesn't exist for your fleeting entertainment" I try to reason.
"Does it even exist?" she mocks casually.
Her mockery is followed by maniacal laughter from Fred.

Fred is a six feet two Adonis, a rather charming flirt, carved by Michaelangelo himself. He is a feminist, intellectually stimulating, hot, a prince of everygirl's dreams. He is too good to be true; had he been straight, I would have been head over heels in love by now. Sorry girls of Bravermen dutch, this fine piece art of is unavailable, he is strictly into other Adonises.

I walked through the hallways making small talk with Fred and Talia waving Hi's and Hello's as we moved through the crowd of uneager, tired seniors & eager, self-conscious freshman, both trying to make it to class.

My first class was AP biology, a class that had a population of 15 students. For some reason, Bravermen Dutch had a statewide record of producing the most business school graduates, hence AP biology & physics classes were nearly empty. It had a handpicked number of students pursuing pre-med, eager to wet their feet in the health industry, and I was one of them.

I settled into one of the last available seats and chitchatted with others as we waited for Mr.Cyr to show up.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door, which was followed by utter silence from the group of 15.
The door creaked open and in walks a tall, toned, muscular and dare I say a freakishly pretty human with an expressionless demeanour. He walked like he was unmoved by life, but that life was unmoved by him too.
His sunkissed face was blank, his face was framed by his dirty blonde hair which was stylishly unkempt. A maroon V-neck clung onto his chest like a second skin–I realised at this point that I am oogling but so was every other girl.

He stared back at the crowd, paused and hesitantly asked, "Is this AP biology?"
Aarushi from the first desk, nonchalantly responds "Yea, but aren't the likes of you supposed to be in football tryouts right now".

He furrowed his beautifully thick brows, murmured a quick thank you and starts walking towards me.
Like a deer caught in the headlights, I keep staring until I was suddenly picking up my 'accidentally' dropped books. Way to go, Kirsten! so proud of your subtlety.

It was only a fraction of second after my brain stops cussing me out that I realize he had taken a seat next to me.
I made up my mind to stop freaking out and blurted a quick Hi meekly.
I tried to filter through all the faces in my head and tried to recall if I had seen him before in school, I come up with nothing, he stands out too much to miss. Maybe he is new here. Maybe I should stop this internal dialogue and talk to him.

"Hey, I am Kirsten, are you new here? I haven't seen you around before 1"
He furrowed his brows in response and looked up from his notebook, paused for a moment then greets me "Hi, can you let me concentrate, I would really like to pass"

Ouch.

During my dilemma, I had failed to realize that Mr.Cyr had already arrived and begun his class, he was now staring at us
"I am glad you are meeting your new classmates, Novak but now is not the time"

Mr.Cyr is one of the most hardworking teachers but he is also very very keen on discipline, being in his bad graces would mean lengthy project work, bad grading and extra questions during oral exams.

The beautiful human sitting next to me who now I know is called Novak is scowling at me openly.
Did I mention how drop-dead gorgeous he was? Well, the social manners on this man was a bummer.

I try to concentrate on drawing up my notes for 'Tubular filtration and reabsorption' but the title is all I have managed to scribble down when the bell rings, I groaned, collected my books and headed out towards English, a class I thankfully share with Natalia, while not even sparing a glance towards Mr. I-am-too-hot-to-interact-with-you.

**

At the end of the school day, I keep wondering if Novak was imaginary as I did not see him in the cafeteria during lunch or meet him in any other class.

I stood next to my beetle as I waited for Talia and Fred to show up, and after 15 mins of dishing out 'advice' to the budding freshman, Talia showed up with Fred and his flavour of the month in tow.

"Heyyyyy Kiri, Gosh today was so long, Ms.Gavells wouldn't quit talking and I have had a headache for as long as I can remember" she speed talked in a single breath.

"Jesus Talia, I forgot how fast you talk, Ooh, so you have Ms. Gavells for biology? Speaking of Biology, guess what happened in class today" I replied.

"you answered a question wrong for the first time in your existence?" she mocked.

"hey, I like biology, don't be mean. But yeah, that didn't happen. A new guy enrolled"

"Is he hot? Is he hot? Please tell me he is hot." she screeched.

"Yea, a smidgen"

"Ooooohh, that's it, Kiri, that's our Mr. Hokey pokey" she teased.

"No Natalia, I am not doing the dirty with Novak, he is just gross" I tried to reason, but by then she was already making plans about how I would court him at the speed of light.

'Taliaaaa, I am going home, I have to be there before Michael" I waved my hands in front of her face snapping her out of the planning daze.

We hugged our goodbyes as the motors roared to life and drove home.
