Chapter 2: The Detour

Third Person P.O.V

The sun had disappeared, stars in the sky and in the headlights along the highway. Jay rubbed the side of his pocket absentmindedly, feeling the undisclosed pills beneath his fingers. They helped him face down Slenderman, something he had never done before. Tim had given them to him before they were separated, and there were only a few left. Now the question was if it would be wise to tell the rest of the people. He knew he should, but was it the right time?

"Habit is a killer..."

Jay glanced back, spotting Vinny staring ahead blankly. "He killed Jeff." "Yeah," Noah nodded, "That wasn-" "He killed Steph..." Vinny finally looked down, "He killed Evan..." "Don't say that," Xakk said, opening his eyes and unfolding his arms, "No one as strong as Evan's gonna bend-" "It's been years..." Jay kept his mouth shut, silently siding with Vinny. Xakk was strange, and with what Noah had said about the 'connection', he wasn't sure they could trust him.

Xakk shrugged, TJ adding "Well, since we're all awake now, you want to switch driving?" Noah replied "I'm fi-"

The GPS rang out "Take Exit 95 North."

Jay looked at the screen, confirming the latest direction as Noah said "That can't be right. That'll take us away from the path." "Do it." Xakk said, looking at the approaching exit sign. The authority in his tone led to Noah flipping the turn signal.

The road instantly lost the light of the highway and of the stars in the trees. Jay spotted a sign with the words sprayed out in black paint, only a white arrow pointing to the dark tunnel. His head started hurting, more and more the further they went back. He cringed, reaching for Tim's bag at his feet. He reached in for pain meds, but his fingers brushed a curved plastic. Instantly, a bolt of red hot pain shot up his arm, deep into his skull. He jerked back.

"Jay?" TJ asked, "Are you okay?" He managed a nod, no longer willing to look for relief. Noah glanced over, unconvinced, but Jay had no intentions on continuing. Instead, he focused on the road ahead.

A sign appeared, along with faint dots along the ground. Noah squinted muttering "What the f***...?", but as they approached, he sat back in surprise.

"A cemetery..." Vinny murmured as they entered the small clearing. "The wrong one," TJ noted, "Sign says so." "What now?" Noah asked as Jay squeezed his eyes shut, sinking deeper into his seat. His brain felt like it was boiling.

"Get out." Xakk said, shoving his door open without hesitation. The others followed slowly, except Jay. Josh looked around, the cemetery lit by the headlights. "Well," he said, "Where's the coughing?" As the others continued walking, Xakk looked back, seeing Jay's state. His jaw clenched, but he carried on.

TJ took out her cell phone light, scanning the treeline. She turned back, light catching Josh. But it wasn't just him. "JOSH DUCK!" She screamed. He didn't hesitate, hearing an ax swing an inch above him. The lights turned on the silhouette, revealing a man in suspenders and blood dripping down his face. He smiled and said "Lovely for you all to come." Josh kicked his legs out from underneath, Noah yelling "HOLD HIM DOWN!"

Vinny jumped in, only to be met with an ax to the ankle. He screamed, falling back. Josh grabbed him and drug him while the man got back up. Xakk held his hand out, making Noah stop as he strode towards the man.

"Hello, Xakk Stewart," He smirked, "I figured you would make it this far." Xakk didn't reply in words, only a death glare. The ground cracked, tentacles reaching up and wrapping around Patrick. He looked up, giving a pitying smile, before he raised the ax, striking the ground.

Xakk threw up a black liquid before he hit the ground limp. "XAKK!" TJ gasped.

Jay forced himself out of the car on shaky legs. He raised the gun from the glove compartment, but a hand grabbed his wrist "Flight not fight right now, deadman."

The man stepped over Xakk, the group backing up with every step. "You do know you are going to get each other killed, right?" He asked softly, "I can guarantee this group won't be so big next week." "F*** YOU!" Noah shouted, taking a stick and throwing a stick at the man. He didn't even flinch, only saying "I expected more from you, Noah."

He took a sharp step ahead, raising the ax. TJ screamed, but he had no chance to hit them; A man stepped up behind him, shouting "Patrick!" He stopped, turning and facing the gloved man, "Well, Carrier, how interesting for you to show up." Patrick swinging the ax but he dodges, grabbing the handle and shoving him back.

The group took no time, running past them and to the van. Josh helps Vinny while Noah and TJ grab Xakk. Josh looks back at the struggling men, asking "Shouldn't we help?" "GO!" Noah pants.

Jay, having turned the van, popped the trunk, letting them jump in. Noah pulled it down and shouted "GO GO GO!" He hit the gas, speeding as fast as he dared down the gravel road.

As soon as the tail lights faded, the Carrier let go, "You know I can take you down in a minute." Patrick smirked, wiping the blood under his nose, "Last I checked, I took down Xakk Stewart without problem." They stood together in the darkened cemetery.

Patrick craned his neck to look at him, "Besides, you won't strike with that girl in limbo, will you?" he didn't respond. "And that's why you didn't let them shoot me?" he laughed once, "What is your part in this?" "I don't know," he stepped towards the road in the moonlight, "What's yours?"
