After I went back to the estate, that night I dialled the number of the womangiven on the paper. After a few rings, somebody picked it up.
"Hello? Is this J.L.?"
But nobody answered.
The other end of the phone only had occasional static sounds. But just when I was about to hang up, a ear splitting scream came through. I winced at the sound as the call went dead. And I sat there staring at the wall in front of me just trying to comprehend what just happened.
A knock came on my door. Still befuddled from that call, I absent-mindedly told them to come in. But when my eyes caught the site of who came, my body stilled.
Maybe, judging by the troubled look on my face, Ace asked, "Did something happen?"
When I take this girl with me and make her meet the same fate as her mother.
You really want to go with the people who killed your mother?
The words repeated in my head. Should I ask him, I wondered, staring at him. And that's when his promise of telling me everything came in my mind. If I was going to forgive him, might as well ask him what's going on before that. "Your promise, remember? So will you tell me everything now?"
He hesitated. Contemplating on what to do, he asked, "Can I sit on the bed?"
I sighed and nodded. He came and sat on the bed as his hands brushed his hair. "What do you want to know?"
"Well, everything. From the start."
"Do you remember anything from you childhood?"
I cocked my head at him. "Well, yes. Except a particular year. The year my mom died."
"We were friends when we were young. You forgot me after your mom died and we parted our ways. That night at the bar I saw you again for the first time after so many years. But you were too drunk and probably didn't even remember me so I didn't say much."
So, he was indeed the one in my dreams. I wasn't really surprised to know we were friends in childhood. The story how we turned out as adults and how our life completely turned polar opposites is what amused me. I nodded for him to continue.
He looked surprised when I didn't ask questions. "I wanted you back in my life so I did what I had to. I kidnapped you, then gave you a reason to stay. You stayed, you did your part and now I have you back in my life."
I narrowed my eyes. "You totally couldn't have just talked to me like a normal person? Like, 'Hey, Ava we were friends once. Nice to meet you again."
He laughed, that smooth voice sounding like a melody. "I like to have things fast."
"I am not a thing though." I snapped, rolling my eyes. "You have to respect my boundaries Ace. You can't just barge in and claim me like some property because if that's your plan to make me fall in love, you will only make me hate you."
He looked down, ashamed. "I guess I some anger management issues huh?"
"I have another question. That man was your father right? That night?"
I could feel the air grow cold. "Yes."
"What did he mean by 'she will meet the same fate as her mother'?
Ace stayed silent for a while. "Ace?" When I called, he glanced at me. "He meant he will kill you. He just wants you dead and in that way he will make you meet the same fate as your mother."
