JOHN POV

I watch silently as Ira walks away.

There goes my one and only sister. I just got her, and now I lose her. It's all because of my stupid Alpha and best friend. If he had controlled his wolf then all of us would be happily with our mates right now.

I wanted her to be happy, so I didn't dare argue with her. I've known her for this short amount of time but I know that she is a strong, independent girl. Never underestimate her.

I felt sad and mad but also proud. She was doing something that she wanted to do, and she was fighting for it. I guess she didn't want to go through what she already has gone through. I know I wouldn't.

Gabe nudged my shoulder making me look up at him before nodding. We started to walk towards the pack house in a peaceful silence. Every once in a while, I would look up at the stars and just wonder if she is alright. I know it has only been like 5 minutes, but still.

Soon enough, we reached the house and Gabe and I ran upstairs to change before anyone could question our all-black clothing. I went into my room and changed while Gabe went into his and did the same. We met back in the hallway where we walked down to the dining room together.

I felt bad for him. I mean, sure we both lost our sister but he has known her all his life. And when our parents died, he took the responsibility to look after her. He protected her from everyone but this one person, he couldn't do anything about. Nor could I and that got on my nerves. As older brothers, we should be able to protect our little sister from anyone and anything.

By now we had reached the dining room and I noticed that there were already a few people seated.

There was a long wooden table in the middle and there were about 20 chairs on each side and two each on the smaller sides. There was plates, glasses, and cutlery already set up in front of each chair. There were covered pots along the middle of the table. It was half full and Gabe and I went and sat on the empty chairs that had 5 in a row. Rachel, Me, Ira, Gabe, Kim and James. That was normally the seating plan.

But Ira wasn't here.

As we sat down, Rachel came and sat next to me. She smiled and then we kissed. It was a quick one and when she pulled back, she looked at me with a worried expression.

"Hun, what's wrong?" She held my hand and gave it a little encouraging squeeze. I gave her a reassuring smile.

"I'll tell you later."

She nodded and let my hand go before opening up the pots in front of us. I stared at the food, my mouth already drooling. There was meat loaf, mashed potato and gravy. I heard Gabe let out a small growl and I followed his gaze. Jace was walking into the room and I also let out a small growl. Rachel held my hand, making me look at her and smile. I was able to relax a bit but I was still on edge.

Now all the seats were full except for Iras and the seat next to Jace.

Jace sat in his at his usual place, on the ends of the table, the chair next to him, empty. It was meant for his mate, for Ira. He immediately started to dig in and as soon as the Alpha did that, everyone at the table did.

Soon enough everyone was chatting to each other and eating.

"Where's Ira?" Rachel asked, causing everyone to hush down.

Gabe and I tensed as everyone looked at the empty spot and started to murmur amongst themselves. I looked at Jace and saw that he was stiff, his head snapped up to meet mine. He looked guilty and as though he regretted something but I simply looked away.
