Neji's Birthday!

Today (July 3rd) is my favorite character's birthday!!!!!! So here is a wholesome little one shot commemorating this little prodigy boy because he super deserves it <3333.

Disclaimer: Wholesome content of course.

AU: Narutoverse in Shippuden, except Sasuke is back and they're all chill and like, not at war or whatever.

"Come on Neji, open your presents already!"

Neji sighed as he inched closer to the barbeque table in order to obey Naruto's orders. His teammates and Hinata had orchestrated a small get together with the fellow Shinobi of their age group for his birthday. While Neji had appreciated the gesture, he really never wanted to have a huge celebration for his birthday anyway. It just never meant anything to him. If he were to actually celebrate his birthday, there would really be only one person who he would choose to spend it with, but he would never admit that to her.

"Come on Neji, stop dawdling and just pick one up!" Kiba exclaimed when Neji was taking too long.

Neji snapped himself out of his own thoughts and brought his signature smirk back onto his face. "Fine then Inuzuka, I'll open yours first."

Kiba showed his fangs in a large smile as he shoved the present toward Neji. Clearly, Kiba's sister had wrapped the present, or possibly Hinata, because the gift was far too neat to be of the dog boy's production.

Neji slowly took apart the paper, much to the annoyance of Naruto and Kiba, and gently laid it to the side. Neji was definitely not one to rip apart the wrapping like a heathen (or like Naruto would anyway). Neji raised his eyebrows as he opened the box to find a......... dog plushie?

Kiba scratched the back of his neck in slight embarrassment as the rest of the group howled with laughter. "Yeah well, Hinata told me that you guys aren't allowed to have pets, but I wanted to get you something you could take care of and love like a real dog!"

"So you got me a stuffed dog to.... take care of?" Neji asked him slowly so as to make sure he had heard correctly.

Kiba nodded enthusiastically in response.

Neji thanked Kiba gracefully and set the stuffed animal aside. He decided that he would probably just give it to Hanabi, she would definitely enjoy "taking care of it" more than he would anyway.

"Ok ok, I'm up next!" Sakura yelled, throwing her gift unceremoniously toward the birthday boy. The gift turned out to be a box of colorful hair ties, which, although he would never admit it, he was actually quite thankful for.

Neji continued to open his gifts, and his friends continued to enthusiastically shove their boxes into his face. He received a new set of shuriken from Hinata, a stale box of ramen from Naruto (which he would definitely be throwing away), a gift card from Sasuke, some bugs from Shino (which he would also be throwing away), scrolls from Sai, flowers from Ino, a barbecue coupon from Choji, a disgusting green jumpsuit from Lee, and just straight up cash from Shikamaru (personally Neji thought that gift had the most use).

Finally, all of the presents from the table were opened. However, Neji felt like there was something missing. He let his thoughts go as everyone soon left to go home, himself included.

As soon as Neji exited the restaurant with his many (and quite ridiculous) gifts in tow, he heard his name being called, by none other than his best friend.

"Neji!" She yelled. "Wait up for a sec!"

He turned around to face the girl. "Yes Tenten?"

She walked up to him slowly and paused, almost as if she was nervous about something. Neji lifted his eyebrow in surprise; Tenten was never nervous around him. "Is something wrong Tenten?" He asked her.

She gulped, and Neji felt a little surge in his stomach when he saw the blush in her cheeks. "Ya!" She answered with a little more confidence. "I haven't given you your present yet."

"Oh?" He smirked. "And what is it?"

Tenten reached up and grabbed his face, pulling it toward hers in a swift embrace of lips. Neji's surprise didn't go unnoticed by the girl, her lips quirked in a smile as she kissed him. To her delite, he kissed her back, with seemingly even more intention than she had. Smiling brightly like she always did, she pulled back and started to run off toward her home.

"See you tomorrow!" She called, leaving Neji speechless and in the dust.

Finally gathering his thoughts after several minutes of confusion and excitement, Neji realized that what had just happened was indeed reality, and not his wildest of dreams. He showed a rare smile to the dark and empty street before him as he continued to make his way back home.

This was the best birthday yet.
