Your Pov:

A month had passed with no word from any of the boys. Mr. Jefferson would be arriving later today. My baby bump, luckily, hadn't gotten a lot bigger. I was worried for the boys since news of Washington sending Alexander home had spread around.

I knew Mr. Jefferson wasn't after my heart, but my father's company. But I'd have to suck it up for the sake of my child.

I made myself presentable and waited. After 30 minutes, there was a knock. I opened the door, "It's nice to see you again, Mr. Jefferson." We went to the sitting room. He spoke, "Has there been any word?" I sighed, "No. I fear the worst, but a deal is a deal." He took the ring out of his pocket, "May I?" I removed the other ring and allowed him to slip on the new one. I looked at it.

It was beautiful, but it weighed me down

It was beautiful, but it weighed me down. He spoke, "And call me Thomas darling. Now, we should get going to Monticello. I'll send a servant for your things." I nodded, "Of course. Let's."

A few minutes later, I found myself in a carriage, watching the manor fade into the distance. The ride to Monticello went by quickly.

As we approached, I spotted servants tending to the plants while others flitted about here and there. The carriage came to a stop. Thomas stepped out and helped me out. He led me inside. The manor was beautiful and big, but it didn't feel like a home. He showed me to a room before leaving me alone. I memorized the way to my room and headed back to the carriage. I spoke to the driver, "Take me into town please." They nodded, "Of course, Mrs. Jefferson."

After I got into town, I walked and did a bit of window shopping. Suddenly, I bumped into someone's chest. I stepped back, "I'm sorry, si-!" I looked up, "Alexander." He spoke, "(Y/n)."

He continued, "How have you been?" We walked into a park and sat on a bench. I sighed, "I'm alright." He hummed, "From what I've heard around town, you're marrying Mr. Pompous in Purple?" I nodded, "...Yes. I fear my fiances are dead. I haven't heard from them in a month." He frowned, "Even if they are dead, why Jefferson? Why not me? I loved you since the beginning when the three of them broke your trust."

I scoffed, "I'm an (L/n). That'd elevate your status. I'd have to be naive to set that aside. Maybe that's why." He looked at me, "And Mr. Pompous won't be elevated? I don't think so." I spoke quietly, "It's not just about status. Thomas is after the company too, but promise you won't tell anyone what I'm going to tell you." He nodded, "Of course." I took a breath.

"I'm...pregnant."

He stared at me, not saying a word. Then, he finally spoke, "Does Jefferson know?" I shook my head, "No. If I marry him, I'll pretend it's his. I have to." He held my hand, "You don't. I have a little place in Harlem. Leave a letter for Jefferson saying that you left and went to the Carolinas or somewhere else." He continued, "He'll be in a meeting tonight. You can leave then." I sighed, "I'll think about it."

He smiled, "If you accept, I'll be waiting here." I stood, "Alright. I should be going. Goodbye, Alexander." I headed back to the carriage and went back to Monticello. Thomas stepped out of the house just as I arrived. I got out of the carriage. He spoke, "The servants have prepared dinner. I have a meeting, but I'll be back soon darling."

I quickly headed inside and up to my room. I watched the carriage pull away from the manor. The servants had brought my luggage up. I sat at the vanity, thinking. After a while, I made up my mind. I grabbed a piece of paper and some ink.

Dear Thomas,

I regret to inform you, that I cannot go through with our deal. It is by nothing you have done, but by my own volition. I am thankful for the opportunity you have presented to me, but I cannot stay here.

By the time you are reading this, I will already be out of Virginia. Please do not come looking for me. I have family in Georgia awaiting my arrival.

I truly hope you won't be too angry or upset.

Sincerely, (Y/n).

I rolled the letter up and sat it on the bed. The sun had set, the stars rising in the sky.

It was time to meet Alexander.
