Later that night, after everyone was asleep, I crept back in the cabin.
June was sleeping on the couch, her little curls bunched around her face.
I felt bad that I was about to control her mind, but it needed to be done.
Swallowing my fear, I placed my hands around her face and closed my eyes.
Picturing a door to her memories, I opened it and granted myself access.
She twitched, slowly becoming aware that someone was messing with her mind.
I quickly sorted through the memories of birthday parties and playing with a puppy. Finally, I stumbled across something interesting.
As I tried to open the memory, she jerked, almost making me lose my focus. That could've been ugly.
Concentrating around her struggles, I pulled the memory and watched it play out in my mind.
"Sir, she's a problem. I know, but I have a daughter to take care of. I can't just up and leave my daughter." The picture became more focused and I saw a woman, who looked like an older version of June, talking to a man who was hidden from me.
I realized I was watching it through June's eyes, and she couldn't see the man. My frustration grew and June twitched again.
"That's exactly what you're going to have to do. Shane wants her gone. She's the only one who can stop him, and he knows that she will. So do something."
There was a moment of tense silence.
Then, the woman slammed her hand on the table and June jumped. "No! You will not force me to involve my daughter! She is all I have, and I will not put her life in danger!"
Dream June started shaking, and I knew something was going to happen.
"Why don't you ask her yourself?" The man sneered.
June's mother turned, and gasped when she saw the carpet complexion shake. June was sitting on the carpet, blending in. She slowly became visible, and tears formed in her eyes.
"Get him out, mommy." She whimpered.
The man chuckled. "Quite a little girl you've got. Pity Shane is going to kill her."
Suddenly all the silverware shot up and pointed at the man. He stepped back and held up his hands.
"Just do the job. Save your girls life. And yours."
He stepped forward, and I reeled when I saw who it was.
"Do the job." Bryson Cally smiled and vanished with a whirl.
I shot out of her mind and tumbled backwards, my own mind reeling. Bryson was working with Shane. Shane was the HIM then. Whoever he really is, he must be powerful, I mused.
June shuddered and fell back asleep, smalll tears leaking from her eyes.
Someone tumbled down the stairs, making a loud racous.
James popped up, smiling like an idiot. "Thanks." I muttered.
"What?" He walked down, running his hands through his messy hair.
