Clare opened her eyes and looked around.
She was in a huge grass, full of violet flowers. There was no sign of the portal, as if they arrived from nowhere. She looked around and saw Grace who was getting up, she looked uninjured.
Dave.
She suddenly got up, stumbling and started screaming.
"Dave! Daaave!" no answer. She put her hands cup-shaped to be heard better and screamed again.
Nothing again.
Meanwhile Grace arrived from her left side, she had a little scratch on the right uncovered shoulder.
"I'm not able to find out where Dave is" said Clare.
"We gotta find him necessarily, let's get to work".
And they looked for him everywhere, on that violet grass, between brambles, between flowers, in pits...but they couldn't find the flying boy.
Clare turned around and behind her shoulders she saw a figure appearing from the grass, she got closer.
She saw a human outline.
Looking better, she understood that she wasn't exactly a girl, she had a really pale skin and red on her cheekbones, her ears were peaky, really blonde hair with a little crown made out of the same flowers that were near her feet.
At a certain point she opened her eyes, they were of an intense light blue.
"Hi, do we know each other?" she answered.
Her facial expression was serious, unchangeable, the white dress she had made her look even more pale, she was sitting.
"No, I'm sorry. Hi, it's my pleasure, I'm Clare" she reached her hand out to make acquaintance.
"Why are you passing me your hand, daughter of Eva?"
"Ehm..we use it as an action to get to know people, you should take it."
She got up, she was a little higher than the other girl.
She reached her hand out to take it but the contact made the other girl jump.
"Aah! You burnt me!" on Clare's hand you could see a red strip.
"I'm sorry, I'm not used to the contact with other people who don't belong to my spieces".
She grabbed her hand again, it was hot now, but it didn't burn.
"It's my pleasure, Violet. What are you doing here?" she asked with a serious face.
"Well, we should have found the Rugwin key.."
"Nonsense, you won't ever be able to do that."
"What?"
"It is basically impossible, you have to face the Engrind wood and the infinite bridge."
"What are these places?"
"Engrind is the most dangerous wood that exists.. there are lycanthropes, witches, fairies, vampires, fauns, demons... and Shadowhunters."
Clare got crazy.
"OH MY GOOOOOOOD, SO THEY REALLY EXIST!"
"Well, you should know that. "All the stories are true", have you ever heard about that?"
"Of course, but I thought they were only words of a book.."
"Never underestimate books, they contain more truth than a lot of other things."
"Right" Clare sighed. She should have been in seventh heaven to know that the demon hunters, main characters of her favorite saga, exist. But she wasn't in the mood. "Look, have you by chance seen a little... guy?"
"Oh, is it yours?"
She showed her left hand, which until then was hidden behind her.
On the palm there was Dave.
Motionless.
Clare could feel her heart missing a beat.
He has been her guardian for a long time, now it was her turn to protect him.
She took Dave delicately and put him in her bag, covering him with handkerchiefs, the only things she could dispose of.
"What happened to him?"
"He did a huge effort, he needs rest, he will wake up shortly" she answered.
Clare let her breath out. Thank God.
"Violet.. but what.. are you?"
"I'm an elf and my brother too, come, follow me."
Clare turned around and saw Grace who had looked at the scene from afar, she called her name.
