Clare grabbed a crook and placed herself between the demon and Violet.

She hit it again and again. It looked like she was holding it back until it grabbed the piece of wood with its jaws and gave her a yank, which was so forceful that she lost her balance and fell down.

Meanwhile, it kept on getting closer to Violet.

It was a few centimeters away from her but at that moment we heard a powerful howling.

A white and grey wolf with light blue eyes showed up from the fog and placed himself in front of her, growling at the monstrous creature.

Violet's face was surprised, while Clare seemed to have a sort of syntony with that animal, as if she knew him. She smiled, while she wasn't still able to get up.

The wolf jumped on the demon, but it gave him a big shake with the neck and pushed him down. He tried to attack it again, but he wasn't lucky: the creature lacerated one of his paws nearly until his bones. The wolf whined and lied down on the ground.

Grace and Dave stepped in, he tried with a little bit of magic but it didn't help, he was affected with the sharp tail of the demon and fell down, Grace tried with a cane too, but she followed the same footsteps as Clare, the impact was so forceful that she fainted.

Meanwhile Clare was struggling, trying to get up.

Violet was undefended.

***

Seeing my sister alone on the top of a cliff gave me the strength to get up. Behind her, the sharped rocks of the river flew into a huge waterfall.

My arm was hurting a lot, but when I saw the demon focusing on her again, I grabbed a branch and placed myself between them.

But it didn't work.

The demon hurled me in the air and I landed on the border of the cliff, with my forehead on the ground.

Luckily, I didn't fall down. Just ten centimeters away from there and I would have fallen in the empty space.

I heard Violet screaming and lifted my head. Fear invaded my heart. It was the first time I was feeling that emotion since our parents passed away.

My sister ran to me, the wolf that had defended her beforehand, jumped on the demon which was coming closer to me.

He still had a teared-out paw, but even if he was limping he was able to stand its ground.

I didn't have the time to exult.

The ground underneath me collapsed and I found myself suspended in the air, with the hurted arm supported by my sister's hand.

"Calm down, I won't let you go!" she screamed to me trying to dominate the powerful noise of the flowing water.

"Violet, I'm slipping!" I screamed terrorised and sorrowful.

Her hand slid along my arm, pushing intensively on my injury, I screamed because of the sorrow. When she reached my palm, she held on tight.

"I'm holding you!"

I saw that the ground underneath her was crumbling, little by little.

"If you don't let me fall down, we'll both die!" I tried to explain to her.

Her hand slid again until she reached mine, I held on tight.

"I'm sorry if I never was the brother you had dreamed." I said while a tear was rolling down my left cheek.

"Nicholas you are, you're the best." she smiled at me while the ground underneath her was about to give up.

I knew I would have never regretted the decision I took in that moment.

"Violet, forgive me."

I let her hand go.

***

"NOOOOOOOOOOO!" I could feel his grab slipping away from mine.

How could he do that? How did he find the courage to save me and leave me at the same time?

"Nicholas.." I said nearly breathless, looking at the water that was flowing below me, without any sign of my brother.

I turned around.

The demon was coming closer to me again, Clare tried to stop it, but there was nothing she could do, it hurt her shoulder with a spine of its tail.

While it was getting closer to me, I could feel a huge sense of peace. I was about to die...who cared, at least I would have met my brother again in the afterlife.

I opened my arms as to welcome the creature, as to encourage it to tear me to pieces.

I didn't even have the courage to cry, it wouldn't have helped at all.

I closed my eyes, waiting to feel the darkness to surround me.

Silence.

A shrill, a scream that could have been everything but human.

I opened my eyes.

The wolf that beforehand had defended me, gravely hurting one of his paws, came back to attack, as if nothing had happened.

How could have he recovered so fast? There was only one solution...he wasn't a wolf, but a Werewolf.

A moment before that the creature hit me, he bounded and jumped on its neck.

He drew his jaws and injured the animal again and again until he took away its life from it.

The demon disappeared in a mass of black gloom, not even its shadow remained.

Did it really end?

I looked around.. there was no sign of the werewolf..

I was alive.

My heart still beat.

That lycanthrope had really saved my life, but despite that I felt a big emptiness inside. An unfillable emptiness.

I fell down on my knees, grabbed my head with my hands and started crying.

I've never cried so much in my entire life.
