Guren sighed as he poured over the documents in his hands. He leaned back in his chair and looked up at the ceiling, his mind occupied by other thoughts. Lately, his mind had been focused on one too many stress-inducing thoughts, to the point where he would be digging himself further into a deeper hole than the one he currently occupied. The JIDA had recently authorized the use of the compact building for minimum research and training of the new rookies. A small smile graced his lips as he thought of their continuous progress in training and strategic thinking. He smirked,'they were learning from one of the best after all'.
However, his thoughts also strayed to the continuous danger they were put in. They were just kids after all. He worried over them more than he'd like to admit, but they didn't really need to know that. He pondered over the last few missions and assignments they had completed, the close-calls they experienced were highly unlucky. It's like the kids attracted danger no matter where they went.
He wondered how long he'd have before he would eventually have gray hairs popping up. He scowled, he was only twenty four! He couldn't afford to be looking old already! Not to mention that idiot Yuu always running headfirst into danger. However, his concern was warranted, by the fact that the last job him and his team had been on, was to investigate a man, allegedly believed to be working under someone the agency had been trying to capture for awhile now.The man was sneaky and had somehow managed to evade them, but as he was about to jump out a window, he turned back and smirked. The man asked him if he had something precious to him, that he could afford to put at risk. At the time he had merely dismissed the man stating that obviously, it was none of his concern. But afterwards, he worried over the words. There could very possibly be a surprise attack on the building, not to mention, it was still in the process of being set up. The truth was, he had too much to risk. If his team were ever ambushed, he knew they wouldn't go down without a fight, protecting each other too of course, but in the end, was that ever really going to be enough? He sighed again, it wouldn't do much to be allowing his thoughts to run wild like that, especially when it was starting to give him a headache. He closed his eyes and scowled again. Suddenly, he frowned. Something felt off.
All of a sudden, Yuu barged into the room. His hair was messy and he looked concerned about something.
"Guren! The place is on fire!" he shouted panting a bit.
"What?!" He stood coming around the desk. "Where are the others?!"
"They're warning everyone to get outside the building."
Guren nodded. Now that the door was open, he could detect the scent of smoke in the air.
"Alright, let's go." The two exited the room, Yuu leading him to where the others were. As they ran further into the building the scent grew stronger. Suddenly, a scream ripped through the air, catching both of their attention.
"That was Mitsuba!" Yuu shouted.
The two quickened their pace. In addition, Guren noticed how pieces of debris seemed to be dropping down. However, just up ahead they could make out a piece of the ceiling, but underneath it they could see Mitsuba along with Kimizuki and Yoichi attempting to lift it to pull out her trapped leg.
"Guys! What happened ?" Yuu asked.
A piece of the ceiling fell on Mitsuba's leg, when we were trying to get out!" Shinoa replied.
Guren silently cursed. This was not the time to be delayed.
"All of you, on three lift! One..two..three! Simultaneously, they all lifted the rock off her foot. Shinoa helped her up and Kimizuki offered to carry her on his back.
" It's time for you to go," Guren said.
The group's eyes all snapped towards him. "You're not coming with us?" Mitsuba demanded. He studied her soot covered face, and knew she was attempting to mask away her own pain.
