A Big Change

"Jake! Hurry up, I need to use the computer for research on the ancient Egyptians!" I say.

"You can do it later Nina! I am about to be the winner in  shoot 'em up!" Said my obnoxious brother Jake.

It was a sunny afternoon in my home city, Los Angeles. Jake was playing his stupid video game again like he does almost every afternoon, and morning if he's lucky. I was taking extra classes that year so I needed the computer more plus it was my first year in middle school and Jake's first year in 7th grade so that meant the only time I could work on my school work was late at night or early in the morning.

"Jake, Nina dinner is ready!" calls our mom.

We scramble over to the diner table Jake gets the napkins and I grab the plates. We set them up and sit down. Our mom brings the salad to the table and our dad brings the chili. I gobble up the food, put my dishes in the dishwasher and run to the computer.

"Yes!" I cry out.

Jake ate too slow and I got the computer! I quickly type in "ancient Egyptians" then I have an idea. I open another tab and type in "shoot 'em up". I see the game that Jake always plays. Lucky for me he is still logged in. I am about to change his character when Jake walks in.

"What are you doing!" Says Jake.

"Um... I was just setting it up for you!" I say as I plant a fake smile on my face.

"Well then are you going to let me play?" Says Jake, a grin spreading across his face.

"Well, I actually need to do school work!" I say.

"If you wasted the time to try to set up the game for me then school work must not be that important," He says in the sweetest voice possible.

"FINE!" I yell.

"Go on and play that ridiculous game that just ruins your brain!" I say.

I jump up out of the chair and he smirks as I storm off.

I am awoken by a scream that sounds like my brother's voice. I creep out of my bed and approach my brother's bedroom. I look in and see an empty bed then I realize something. I walk into the living room. I'm right! Jake is sitting on the office chair staring at the screen. I smirk and lean on the wall.

"Hey Jake, did you have a little problem with your video game?" I say with a big grin planted on my face.

My grin slowly disappears as Jake turns to face me. His face looks just like his video game character! Now he is the one with a wide flat grin planted on his face.

I slap my hands to my mouth as he pulls out the gun that he always used in his video game. I screamed and ducked the rifle.

"I'm your sister!!" I yell

His smile just widens and he aims again.

I run to the right and Jake points his rifle at me. I  flipped over him and land on the office chair. Then I grab the rifle and put it in a trunk that we have always had in the living room. I take the key and lock it. I am to amazed that I was able to flip over my brother and dodge the rifle to notice that my brother is approaching. He is no more than five feet away when I come back to my senses. Stuffing the key deep down into my pocket I run into my room and lock the door shut.

I wake up the next morning feeling like I am forgetting something. And then it hits me. I creep out of my room and peek into my brothers room. He is in his bed snoring like a chainsaw. I let out the breath I have been holding and I make my way back to my room. After I am dressed I walk silently to the living room. I sit down in the office chair and type in "Ancient video game character myths"  I scroll down and find a headlined " Video game myths that are actually real"  I click on it with my mouse and start to read

In 1919,

I check the year. It says 2020, I keep reading

January 1st

"Last night it was January 1st," I think as my brain starts to understand.

I keep reading.

an Asteroid hit the largest computer on earth, it is still the largest computer today. The computer's name is Luna 101. The Asteroid hit the computer which caused all people who were playing shoot 'em up to turn into their characters.

I stop reading and know what I have to do. But before I can do it I hear my mom call for breakfast.

"Um...DON'T WORRY, I WILL SET UP THE WHOLE TABLE YOU JUST COME WHEN YOU WANT TO!" I yell down the hall.

"Nina! Why are you yelling so loud?" said my dad.

"And Jake is right here! He set up the whole table!" I hear my mom's voice say.

I slowly turn around, and staring straight at me is Jake or should I say wingedbeast94 (His Shoot 'em up game character name) I look into those blood-red eyes, I can see his video game character more closely now.

His face might be the worst part, his eyes are both blood red, and on the left, there is a scar running right across his eye. He has a large chunk taken out of his nose and black lipstick. His shirt is an army shirt with a large dragon on the front and there are golden and black wings sticking out of his back. His pants are simple blue jeans with a skull pattern and last, his shoes are sneakers with barking dogs all over them and I jump back as they start to bark and move.

"Um... I like your new outfit." I say taking a big gulp of orange juice.

He grunts and to my surprise says " thanks".

I glance at my parents to see if there is any sign of noticing that Jake has changed but they show none.

"Oh by the way..." says my dad as he pulls out something from under the table.

" I found one of your toy guns, Jake." says my dad as he hands Jake the gun that I had risked my life to lock up.
"Thanks, Dad," says Jake in a raspier voice than usual.

"Oh, honey! I think you need a cough drop!" says my mom as she rummages through her bag.

She pulls out a cough drop and slides it across the table to Jake. He pockets it and finishes his toast. He walks to his room, gun in hand, and as he turns the corner to his room I see a smile on his face.
