Rachel's P.O.V~
The night sky could just barely be seen from the hospital room. A couple hours had passed and I nodded off in the chair that was placed next to my mother's bed. It was well into the night as it became evident that I wouldn't be leaving my mother's side anytime soon.
I won't let her wake up without me here
I had awoken because Cory's phone went off, but I didn't bother reacting. I remained sprawled out in the chair with a blanket the staff provided and my eyes closed.
"Hey dad," Cory said in a hushed tone. He continued, "Yeah, we're still at the hospital. We're gonna stay the night-" A couple moments passed before he replied again, "Yeah, I need to be here."
The call ended and his footsteps grew louder before I felt the seat beside me sink with his weight. The silence in the room was only present beside the repetitive sound of the heartbeat monitor. I felt as a kiss was pressed softly onto my cheek.
~a month later
My mom remained hospitalized as things had managed to return to what they were beforehand: me going about my daily life and then visiting my mother at the hospital everyday.
I pulled on my jacket as to my dismay the memories of the events, especially my mom's seizure, still had me shaken up. The sickening thought remained on loop.
I picked up the last of my stuff to leave. These past weeks had blurred past yet still felt as if they dragged on for ages. I made my way downstairs and into the kitchen, grabbing my apple off of the countertop.I made my way towards the door, honestly lost in my thoughts.
"Hey, hey!" said Cory's voice from behind. I turned as I saw him make his way down the stairs wearing a sweatpants and a maroon shirt accompanied by his dark blue robe.
"You look cozy," I said. My overall mood honestly still in the gutter.
He responded, his mood a complete contrast of mine yet concerned, "And you look like you're leaving the house-
How you doin, babygirl?"I checked my bag for my phone before I turned my attention back to him. He started, "I was thinking, what if we went on a little retreat? Or I guess- vacation?"
My mind was still too concerned about my mom that the thought of leaving didn't even process in my mind.
I responded, "I uh- I wanna get there the moment visiting hours start."In response he glanced at the floor for a moment before responding. "Yeah.. you're right, you'd obviously want to be by your mom right now-
I'm recording but I can stop and meet you in the car-""No, it's okay. You can finish up what you're doing upstairs. I'm taking the bus anyway, I'll see you later.
Love you, bye," I kissed him, preventing him from protesting before making my way out of the house.I found myself at my mother's bedside; the burning question still in mind. A month had passed and she was getting worse.
"Mom, you have to choose." Despondent as ever, she stirred in her bed, reluctant to comply with my concern. "Mom.."
I continued even amidst her silence, "The doctor- he said. Without treatment-
well, there's no way we're even considering that option.
But every day, that we don't start this is another day that's wasted."I called to her again, "Mom."
She slowly turned her head towards me, her demeanor discouraging me from persisting.
"Chance," she finally replied.I questioned, "What?" She sat up and then explained whilst rolling her eyes, "You said, that they said there's a chance that it will help, Rachel."
I continued, "At the least- we can have the tumor removed-"
