There Were Lilies

Albus Severus Potter walked through the halls of Hogwarts at night, desperate to not be seen by Mrs.Norris. God forbid that stupid cat would get in the way of him going to the library.

But then Albus' feet took him on a different path. He was so deep in thought, he didn't notice it. But then he saw the doorway to the Headmaster's office.

I shouldn't be here. I'll get caught. And besides, this isn't the library.

Or maybe he wouldn't. And he felt as if this was the way to go, even if it wasn't the library.

He entered and looked around. Headmaster McGonagall wasn't here. There was no harm done.

"What are you doing here?" A voice sneered. It was deep and silky, and it scared the crap out of Albus. He looked around and saw the source of the voice.

He walked toward the painting that containted the previous Headmaster, but he had never seen this man before. He was tall and thin, with greasy black hair and a crooked nose, the pale skin somehow matching his dark clothes. The portrait had a tint of green, this man was a Slytherin. Like Albus.

"I-I, um, I'm just here walking around, I got lost, you see?" Albus made up a lie quickly, as he was very cunning.

The man glared at him in the eyes, but then his expression lightened. "Your eyes..."

"Yeah, they're really green. I quite like them." Albus found himself blabbering, but the man didn't tell him to stop, so he kept on. "Dad says they come from my grandmother. Her name was Lily. I'm the only one who has her eyes, other than Dad. James has brown eyes. You probably know James, he goes here too. But he's in Gryffindor, I'm in Slytherin." Albus' chest stuck out with Slytherin pride, and the man smiled.

"So was I. I was actually Head of Slytherin, a while ago. But that's enough of me. What's your name?"

   "Albus Severus Potter." Albus said.

The man's expression twisted slightly, and the man blinked away a tear. He began to smile. A true, genuine smile. "And I'm Severus Snape."

Severus and Albus talked for hours. About random things. About Harry, and, surprisingly, Grandmum Lily. Albus didn't know why he spoke of Lily so highly, but he listened to Severus the entire time.

"So you taught my dad?" Albus inquired.

"Yes, I taught him. Remember him quite well, actually. Bit of a dunderhead, really." Severus said, the joke in his dark eyes.

"He kinda is actually...I'll have to tell him about you."

Albus was still talking to Snape when McGonagall walked in, surprised to see a student in her office. She was about to yell at him and take 50, maybe more, points from Slytherin. But Snape saw McGonagall and said quickly, "Excuse the boy, Minerva. I kept him up last night, forgive me."

McGonagall was stunned. Was...Was Severus Snape sticking up for Harry Potter's child?

"All is well, Severus." She said, looking at Albus. "You should probably go rest, child. There are classes to attend to."

"Okay, Headmaster. I'll tell James about you, Snape. I'll tell Dad and Lily too." Albus got up, about to leave, but Snape quickly said, "Lily?"

"Yeah," Albus replied. "My sister, Lily Potter."

Severus smirked, thankful he hadn't lived long enough to see the name "Lily Potter" on his roster. Or "James Potter" for that matter.

   ...

   Dad,
I saw a new portrait last night in the Headmaster's office. I didn't know who he was at first, but then he told me his name was Severus Snape. He was the Head of Slytherin, he could've taught me! He says he taught you as well! Is he where I get my name from, Dad?
We talked a long while, Snape and I. He said he remembered you, and he called you a dunderhead.
He also said he remembered Grandmum. But he didn't teach her, he says they were good friends. Hell, he wouldn't shut up about her for a bloody moment. But I didn't want to tell him to stop talking about her, he seemed to like remembering her.
I'll tell James to look at Snape, and Lily as well.
  Albus.

   ...

   Dear Albus,
Yes, you do get your name from Severus. He was a great man, like I've always said. I'm glad you got to meet him.
Merlin, I don't even wanna know what you were doing when you went to the Headmaster's office in the middle of the night.
He taught me until my seventh year, when he became Headmaster and I dropped out of Hogwarts. He was rather...peculiar is the best word.
And he talked about Lily, eh?
Don't show your sister to him until a long time from now. I'm afraid when he sees Lily, that'll be his undoing.
Could you tell me what his portrait looked like, Albus? I never quite got to see it, though I ordered one to be made. I gave the job to your Godmother Luna and thought she'd be the best painter for him.
   Sincerely, Dad.

   ...

   Dad,
Snape's portrait...I don't quite know how to describe it. The room is rather dark, but with a greenish tint, like the Slytherin commom room. There's a Slytherin curtain, to show Slytherin pride. Severus stands with a glare and his arms crossed most of the time, but he smiled when he saw my eyes and heard my name. There's a bookshelf on the wall behind him, and a table on the side wall, with random potions ingredients scattered about on it.
Dad, could you explain this part to me? I don't quite understand why it's there...
On the front of the table, right next to Snape, there's an emerald green vase with a bunch of lilies in it. It's actually the most beautiful thing in the room.
   Albus

   ...

   Dear Albus,
You wanted to know what the vase of lilies mean?
It means Luna did a great job.
   Sincerely, Dad.
