It was Saturday afternoon Landry was on her way out to Bucky's house. It was a cool crisp Saturday she had spent the day with her older brother Oakley and his wife Tinley helping her nieces and nephew pick out pumpkins. She had rushed home showered and quickly changed into a pair of skinny jeans and a pink camisole and pulled one of her Sherpa hoodies on.
As she was making her way out to the Barnes family land. She smiled she remembered how much she loved that part of town. It was always so beautiful during the fall especially the sunsets lowering over the farm land. She counted four houses but it wasn't hard to find once she saw he big ass truck in the driveway.
She pulled into the gravel driveway he came around the front of the porch. He had a wrap around porch.
"You are still driving that thing?" He said when he seen her all black Jeep.
"No. This a newer model thank you." She said
"Well that's good to know." He said as he took her around to the side of the porch.
"Who died that you got this house?" She said
"My aunt Darby dad's baby sister." He said
"Oh..sorry." She said
"Don't worry about it. She died three years ago." He said as he poured her a glass of wine and laid her plate of food down in front of her.
He sat down beside her with his beer and plate.
"So you mentioned Vandy? You went all the way to TN to go to college?" He said
"Well my mom lived up there at the time. So yeah." She said
He looked at her confused."my parents are divorced." She said
"I know that I'm not dumb. I'm just trying to figure out why you never mentioned going to TN." He said
"Cause I didn't. I saw my mom at holidays and Summer." She said
"Oh. Wait you said at the time. Where is she now?" He said as he took a bite of food.
"She died right before my junior year there. She had been battling breast cancer for four years. It was why I chose to go so I had time with her. They had been divorced since I was 8. She went back cause her family was there they met at UNC during their freshmen year." She said
"Oh Landry Im so sorry." He said as he reached for her hand.
"Thanks. So this is really good." She said
"Thanks. I'm glad you like it my mom came by to make sure I was doing okay. She kept telling me I needed to add chicken then got mad that I had none." He said
"It's totally fine. I'm not a big meat eater." She said as she took a sip of her wine.
"Well that's good to know. So how was your day?" He said
"Good I spent it with my older brother and his family at the pumpkin patch. What about you?" She said
"Football practice had the team over to watch game tape in my basement. I have a whole big set up downstairs to have them see the other teams mistakes and weaknesses as well as theirs." He said
"Sounds fun. So about this hot scandal I did my research. Now I understand the apology video." She said
"Yeah.." he said
"I think them firing you had more to do with how you didn't play by the rules of publicity." She said
"Oh I'm sure it had to do with both me sticking it my coach's wife and daughters as well as that." He said
"Why do you seem so upset?" She said
"Landry that was my dream that went up in smoke. It was all I ever wanted I didn't want to be here. I only finished college because my mom asked me to so I had a back up plan in case it fell apart." He said
Landry scooted her empty plate away and slid off her stool. She made him look at her as she stood by him.
"Now this isn't the Bucky Barnes I remember. He told me everyday that football would always be there. Buck I don't understand the whole sports thing but I do know that coaching football is still having football in your life. It may not be the way you want it I'm sure you would rather be the one on the field." She said
"Duh.." he said
She smiled at him. "But maybe now gives you the chance to make sure none of those boys get their heads in the cloud. You know the ins and outs of that world now and you can protect them." She said
He smirked and shook his head. "God you definitely know how to fix me don't you. I'm glad I have you back in my life Landry." He said
"Good. Now can I have some more wine and more food please?" She said
"Yes you can." He said
He went to get her more wine and food. They continued to talk as the sun began to set. He went to clean up as she watched it. She felt him
come up behind her and stand beside her.
"I forgot how peaceful it is out here." She said
"Yeah." He said as he opened up another beer.
She took the wine bottle and poured more. "I'm cutting you off and giving you my guest bedroom." He said as he took the empty bottle.
She gasped. "I'm perfectly fine." She said
"Nope. I'm not letting you leave here." He said as he pulled her keys out of her back pocket.
"Give me my keys." She said as she followed him inside.
"Not till the morning." He said as he put them on top of his fridge.
"You are so rude." She said as he took her out the back door and they laid on the hammock.
Once the sun was completely down they went inside Bucky gave her a t shirt and showed her to his guest room. She made herself comfortable and fell asleep. The next morning she got dressed and made her way downstairs to find him making breakfast.
When he laid down the plate in front of her of avocado toast topped with a poached egg. She looked up at him.
"Now you are speaking my language. I love avocados. Especially like this." She said as she dug in.
He gave her some orange juice in a mason jar then joined her with his plate. Once he cleaned up he gave her keys to her and walked her out.
"Thanks for hanging out with me last night. I'm glad that we can be friends now. But more importantly thanks for always being the one pull me out of the hole." He said
She smiled. "Is that what we are calling it?" She said
"Yes my dark hole I always get into." He said as he hugged her.
"Okay. Well I will see you at work tomorrow." she said
"Text me when you get home. And yeah see you tomorrow." He said
"Bye." She said as she got in her jeep.
Bucky tapped her hood as he walked by it and she put it in reverse. Once she was gone he was sitting on the couch of his living room.
"Okay God..is that reason I needed to make things right with Landry?" He said to his ceiling.
"A sign would be nice." He said as he continued. Winnie and James came in.
"Who are you talking to son?" James said
"Oh hey..I was talking to God." He said as he stood up.
"Now whose lost it." Winnie said
James started laughing uncontrollably. "Dad! Traitor!" Bucky said in a raised tone.
"Sorry..I'm sorry. But that was so good son oh god I needed that sweet darlin." James said as he tried to control his laughter.
"I hate you both." He said as he walked off.
