"did your mom teach you how to make these?" Ricky asked while taking another bite of the deep fried dessert.

"I guess you can say that." Nini shrugged.

"so your asian descent, is that all from your mom's side?" He questioned curiously.

"actually no.. it's my dad's side." She responded in a little drag in her words. Ricky remained quiet, his mind clouded with a bit of confusion.

"he left my mom and I when I was little. And the woman who taught me how to make these was actually my mom's girlfriend." Nini carefully watched Ricky's reaction. She coughed out a little laugh at how puzzled he looked.

Carol was Nini's biological mother. Although she was white-american, she never neglected Nini's filipino heritage in spite of her father's lousy act to abandon them. Instead, Carol took it upon herself to learn the culture and pass knowledge onto Nini as she grew up. Having Dana in her life who was practically like a second mother to Nini, she had educated her even more about her roots.

"She met her girlfriend online who's actually from the Philippines." Nini clarified.

"Are they here now?" Ricky asked, a little concerned to hear where this story was leading into. She shook her head, but still managed to maintain a little smile on her face.
