It didn't work.
Wave looked down at his exam, entirely written in English, and sighed. If this were written in Thai, he'd be done by now, he was sure. English was never his strongest subject in school, but living in an English-speaking country for the last four years had certainly improved his proficiency. He spoke English with his colleagues and acquaintances, not caring enough to make friends while studying in the United States. He filled in the final bubble on his scantron before he turned it in with a slew of his peers. He was sure that he got every question correct. There was no looking back as he grabbed his bag and left the building. He was free.
Wave was making his way back to his home country in three days. His years of undergrad were over, and he was looking to reconnect with his culture before returning to the States for graduate school and, eventually, the rest of his life. He hadn't gone back since his grandfather passed away three years ago, and he really missed the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Massachusetts was too laid-back for his liking.
Wave returned to his apartment and ignored his roommate in favor of going straight to his room to pack. He wasn't excited to live with his grandmother for the next three months, but he didn't have any friends back in Thailand. He had lost touch with everyone from high school, from class one, from the Gifted class.
He had lost Pang before he'd lost anyone else.
Wave sighed and threw himself on his bed. How could he forget Pang? That idiot had tried so hard to abolish the oppressive system of their school only to fail time and time again. Only to have his memory erased and his Gift all but stripped from him. He started forgetting things from before he went to Ritdha. It scared Wave how Pang would forget things. Suddenly, Pang was more of a liability than an asset. Wave didn't want to give up, but he and everyone else thought it would be better for Pang if they deleted his video and stopped their quest in taking down the principal.
Wave regretted ever deleting the video.
Through social media, he knew that Pang had attended university in Bangkok, despite being raised in Chiang Mai. He was studying communications in hopes of becoming a writer. Wave remembered finding the Cute Boy Facebook page of Pang's university and laughing at the picture of Pang they decided to post. It wasn't the most flattering, but Wave had to agree that Pang was pretty cute. He's always thought that, but Pang had grown into his looks after high school. It was sad to think that Pang didn't know who Wave was now.
Wave packed up the rest of his belongings into boxes and suitcases. It was a long flight back to Thailand, a country that no longer had anything for him.
