Wave returned to the U.S. with a heavy heart. His new roommate was also a Master's student, but he was from a different department so they didn't have much in common. He mostly kept to himself, as usual.
The statistics class he taught was a highlight of his semester. His students were diverse and excited to learn about statistics, despite it being an optional class for most of them. They were very nice and understanding when they didn't understand Wave's pronunciation exactly. He made friends with a few of them when they visited his office hours once a week.
Wave and Pang texted and video called as much as possible, but the time difference was certainly a struggle. Wave would wake up at ungodly hours of the morning just to chat with Pang for fifteen minutes, not that he minded. They hadn't seen each other in months, but one morning Pang asked if he was busy during his Thanksgiving break.
"So he's coming to visit you?" one of his students, Stacy, asked during his office hours. "That's really sweet."
"I guess," Wave shrugged. He responded to an email, then turned toward his student. "I haven't seen him in so long. I don't know how he'll react when he sees me. I feel like I've changed."
"What's the issue? People grow and change all the time. He's probably changed too."
"I don't know..."
"You talk to him every day right? At least he's still into you after being away for months. That has to count for something," she said. Stacy tapped her pencil to her textbook. "Can you help me with this problem? I can't tell whether this is positive or negative."
Wave sighed and did his job.
The week before Pang was visiting, Wave brought it up with his roommate Ben. "Is it okay if someone stays with me for a few days over Thanksgiving break?"
Ben shrugged. "I don't care. I won't be here anyway. Just don't touch my shit."
And that was the end of that conversation.
Pang's flight was landing Monday in the middle of the night, which wasn't the most convenient for Wave's early-morning schedule, but he didn't mind getting less sleep if he got to see Pang. Pang, his boyfriend who he hasn't seen in three months.
The flight was delayed so Wave stood in the airport waiting for Pang for over an hour. He was exhausted, but as soon as he saw Pang rolling his suitcase on the other side of the large room, all his worries disappeared. Pang was there, in the flesh.
Pang was tired too, but he speed-walked right into Wave's waiting arms. He dropped his suitcase and carryon by their feet and embraced his partner.
"I love you," was the first thing out of Pang's mouth.
Wave kissed his boyfriend's stupid face. "I love you too, you moron. Now let's go back home to fucking sleep."
Wave had to wake up in two hours and teach a class and write his thesis and study until his brain hurt but right now, his person was next to him again, finally.
