Em's P.O.V.
After a few moments of awkward silence, filled only by Miller's half-hearted attempts to lighten the mood, I finally gathered enough courage to speak up remembering something they said in their explanation.
"So... um, is 'mates' like soul mates or something?" I asked, my voice hesitant, unsure of what to expect.
They all nodded, their eyes softening slightly as if the question had touched something deeper within them.
"For werewolves like us, finding a mate feels like discovering our missing piece," Jackson mused, his eyes glazing over as if he were drifting into another realm. "It's as if the universe has conspired to bring two souls together, intertwining their fates in a way that transcends mere attraction. The moment we see them, an overwhelming urge to cherish and safeguard them with everything we have takes hold. It's not just a desire; it's a primal instinct, a call that resonates deep within our very beings."
The words hung in the air, weighty and full of meaning. I didn't realize they took mates so seriously.
"Is that the reason you took us? Do you truly believe that we are meant to be together?" I asked.
Did they expect me and Sophia to be with them? After everything that had happened, after they kidnapped us?
Edward must have seen the look on my face because he spoke before I could ask. "We don't expect you to accept us right away. We just want you to give us a chance. To prove to you that we can be worthy of your love and presence."
His eyes were fixed mostly on Sophia, his expression earnest, almost pleading. It was clear he really wanted that chance.
"Wait, so you kidnapped us and now you're asking for a chance?" Sophia snapped, her voice sharp with anger. The words hit the room like a crack of thunder, and the others immediately looked down, their faces colored with guilt. Sophia scoffed, her tone dripping with disbelief. "I don't know what hole you've been living in, but there's something called asking someone out on a date. And getting to know them."
Her words hung heavy in the air. I had never heard her speak to a guy like that before—bold and unfiltered. It was shocking, yet somehow, I admired her for it.
I squeezed her hand, offering a quiet comfort, trying to calm the storm brewing inside her.
Jackson's voice trembled with sincerity as he admitted, "We... we really don't know what we were thinking." The regret in his tone was palpable, a stark reminder of their missteps. "We're truly sorry."
His apology struck me as deeply heartfelt, emerging from a well of introspection. Yet, as he continued, desperation crept into his plea. "But please, just give us one more chance. Please."
I had never witnessed such earnestness in someone's voice before. The gravity of his words enveloped me, heavy and unanticipated.
I inhaled slowly, the silence around us thickening. After what felt like an age, I finally managed to murmur, "We need to think about this. Its all too much too soon."
"Alright, we get it, but you can't just walk out of here," he insisted.
"Why the hell not?" I retorted, my voice laced with fury.
"The rogue who escaped has picked up your scent. Until he's caught and dealt with, he'll keep coming back to hurt you. Rogues are driven by their pride, and you've made a fool of him."
I let out a heavy sigh, "All we want is to go home," I admitted, feeling the weight of the last 24 hours pressing down on me like a suffocating blanket. My heart ached with the longing for the familiar comforts of home and the warmth of my own bed.
