anna stood in the middle of her room, stuffing the last of her clothing into her heavy suitcase, the sun streaming onto her pale winter skin. holly walked over from the kitchen carrying a box labeled 'memories'.

"trying to make me cry, are ya?" anna pouted, taking the box from holly and piling it next to the rest of her things to be placed on the cargo train.

"it's just so ye don't forget me." she smiled sympathetically before walking back and sitting down on the settee. stuart walked in carrying his own boxes and placing them in his new bedroom.

"john is waiting downstairs." stuart nodded, walking next to holly, who stood up and locked eyes with her best friend, tears threatening to fall from her waterline.

"well, this is goodbye." anna smiled, opening her arms widely as holly crashed into them.

"stay safe, ann." she pressed her palms onto anna's shoulders before allowing stuart to wave her goodbye, watching as she grabbed the handle of her suitcase, closing the door to her old flat behind her, sighing in the brokenness.

anna walked over to john after checking in with the front desk for confirmation, a pouted smile on her lips. she ran a light hand through his hair as he swallowed, avoiding eye contact. "i love you." she exhaled, kissing him on the cheek. "i always will."

those words broke him and he quickly pulled her into him, squeezing onto her tightly and sniffling through his persistent tears—he felt less of a man. he kissed her on the lips before looking her deep in her eyes. "i never thought i could feel this way about someone, ann." his chest rose and fell. "i wish i told ye how i felt earlier, so that we had more time." he grabbed her hand.

"it's no one's fault, johnny." he pressed his forehead to hers.

"call me everyday. and ill write te ye."

"john..." he grabbed her jaw and leaned in for an emotional kiss, the hissing sound of a train slowing into the station, wind rustling through anna's soft blonde hair. anna sighed and looked behind her as people began to file into a queue. she bent down to grab her bag but john stopped her.

"why can't ye leave in a few days?" he whispered into her hair as she stood, half bent down to her suitcase. she brushed away her hair to look him in the eyes.

"john, you have a life here. and a bright future ahe--" he tutted. "you do! whether you believe It or not. and i can't allow myself to stand in between you and your destiny. if it's meant to be, somehow, someway, i'll find you again." it was the hard truth, but when it was the end of something so veneer, anna had nothing left to hide from him. the couple had discussed what would happen of them prior, and decided the best thing to do was to move on.

john said nothing and allowed anna to walk past him, helping her fix his corduroy hat to her head, watching as she smiled sympathetically and waved, disappearing into the cart of the crimson train headed for germany. he felt his heart break again, and his shoulders slumped as the train whistle blew, the wheels moving forward and departing, enlarging the distance between the young lovers.
