'Beautiful Girls Are The Loneliest'

You feel tears well up in your eyes as you listen to McBusted's CD. You couldn't help it, you always got emotional when you listened to this song, it reminded you of before you met Calum; you HAD been lonely. Well, you wouldn't class yourself as beautiful but you had definitely been lonely.

"At least MY beautiful girl isn't lonely anymore," Calum envelopes you in his arms but you don't respond. "Hey, Mariam, what's up?"

"Um, nothing. I've...gotta go, just somewhere to be..." You pick up your bag, not really knowing why you were leaving. It wasn't because of the song, anyway.

"Hey, I'll come with you!" Calum stands up too, pressing pause on his Spotify.

"No! Look, I don't know...I've just...see you soon, Calum,"

"Look, have I done something? Because if I have, I'm really sorry but I don't know what it is, please just tell me Mariam."

"You haven't done anything! I'm probably just tired, I don't know-"

"So you don't even know? Great, I have a girlfriend who doesn't even know how she feels half the time. I didn't have you down as the weak, insecure type." You stop moving, your lips parted.

"Oh that's great. Really bloody great. My own fucking boyfriend hates me. Nice to know you're only sticking with me because you think I'm insecure. Well, I'm strong, Calum, just so you know. Go on, walk out of the door! You don't have to stay any longer, go and do whatever the hell you want." You turn away, waiting for him to leave. He comes up behind you and touches your elbow.

"I didn't mean what I said. I'm sorry, Mariam."

"So now I have a boyfriend that doesn't let me have any time on my own, lies to me and is then, basically, hypocritical about it! I've never heard so much crap." You turn around and look into his eyes and he seems to think that you've forgiven him. You slap him across his cheek and pick up your bag, storming out of his house and slamming the door.

---

You don't swear much but when you do, you can't seem to stop. It seems to be the only way you can vent your feelings to everyone else; you only swear when you're angry.

It is two days since you slapped Calum. You haven't heard from him and you most certainly aren't going to be the first one to make a move. You had never hit anyone like that before and it had scared you a bit; you wanted Calum to decide what to do.

"Hello, dear, your best friend's in the living room. She wondered if you wanted to go shopping." Your mum comes into your room and sits on the bed.

"Tell her thanks but no thanks; I don't feel like it." Your mum sighs.

"It will do you good, you know. Anyway, go and tell her that if you're not going. Because I'm not doing it, Mariam. She's your best friend. Now, I saw that you had a lot of homework to complete? You may just have to power through some of that if you don't leave the house in the next half hour." You groan and trudge downstairs and into your living room. (I'm gonna call the best friend Ruby but you can use whatever name you want in your head!!)

"Mariam, you're coming with me. You slapped Calum. So what? By the sounds of it he deserved it. When he mans up and texts you, then you can get back with him. But not before. So come with me, splash about ten quid on tat and rubbish and you'll feel much better!" Ruby stands up and you follow her, grabbing your purse. You slip on some green converse and pursue your friend, closing the door behind you.

You live close to town, about a mile, so you can walk in very easily. Sometimes, if you were feeling lazy, you'd catch the bus. However, there wasn't anymore for about twenty minutes so you and Ruby walked.

Once you reached the town centre, you decided to go to Primark. You needed some more jeans and that was the best and cheapest place to get them. Also, your best friend wanted to get a t-shirt or jumper.

You giggle past the colourful shop windows, telling each other what you would buy if you had a million pounds. Ruby chooses a lot of rolls of fabric and sample make-up; she's wants to be a personal stylist or designer when she's older. You choose a lot of clothes, make-up, gadgets, films and food!!

When you reach Primark you both wander off to the ladies section, stopping at the jeans. You pick up a few pairs, all varying in colour and skinniness. Ruby already has some shirts in her arms and you go off to the fitting rooms together.

"Hello, how many items have you got there girls?" The fitting rooms' assistant asks, peering at the garments.

"Err...I think we have eleven all together. No, wait! Um...twelve, we have twelve."

"Ok...there you go, thanks ladies!" She hands you the card and smiles before turning around and sorting out the mound of unwanted clothes behind her.

You make your way into a free changing room and hang up your clothes, of which you have many!

You decide to first try on the super skinny black jeans and take them off the hanger. Ruby picks up a blue and green checked shirt, holding it against her body to see whether it went with her shorts.

"Rubes, why would you do that? You're only trying it on, not making an outfit. I didn't actually realise we had all this stuff...maybe we overdid it??"

"I don't think you can overdo it. They're all different and I think that means you can get a load and one of them will definitely be for you. That's quite a lot like many things in life. Like boys, too. Plenty of fish in the sea but only one that's right for who you are." She pauses and looks at you. "I've seen how happy you make Calum. He's just protective over you and he always wants to be where you are. Don't blame him so much. He loves you, Mariam." Ruby hugs you as you start to cry, your hands trembling slightly. "And he can cheer you up a lot better than I can."

"Ruby, I shouldn't have slapped him. It was a stupid little argument about nothing. This is all my fault."

"Look, you love him, right? So you wouldn't just hit him for no good reason. He made you mad, and whether what he said was true or not, he made you feel that way. Now you can either carry on sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself, or you can make up with him." Ruby looks at you and you know you've been beaten. You sigh and pick up all the pairs of jeans, walking out of the changing room. You hand the four you don't want to the assistant and carry on walking. Once you reach the checkout, you hand them over and wait for the total.

"That'll be sixteen pounds in total, please. Would you like a bag?"

"That'd be great, thanks." You take the paper bag from the man and wait for Ruby. You aren't waiting for long, however, and soon you both face the cold wind again, laden with new clothes.

"What did you ge-" You stop talking. There, in front of you, is Calum. "Cal, I- I'm sorry, I don't- what are- are you ok?" Calum's with one of his friends, too, but he doesn't appear to have bought anything yet.

"I'm sorry. It's not your fault, Mariam, I was stupid, you're not insecure, I hardly know what I feel half the time either. And I should let you have some time on your own, I just...I love you so much and-"

"You love me?" You don't say it in a patronising or harsh tone, but he's never actually said it to you before. You haven't said it to him either. "I love you too, Calum, and if I was to lose you, I wouldn't...you're my second half, and I love spending all my time with you." You smile at him. "Friends?"

"We're more than friends, Mariam." He says, grinning as he slides his arms around your waist. "And I don't ever want to lose you."
