"Kyle stop goofing around. I'm driving the car" I yelled to my brown haired son in the backseat, who kept annoying his older sister. I could almost feel Lily's waves of frustration emitting off of her. At this point Kyle's continuous questions, plus his loud yelling was making the two hour drive even more unbearable.
"Kyle shut up." I heard Lily, my daughter, grimly say. This was one of the many reasons our family did not go on road trips.
"Fine, but only if you tell me how much longer it will take us till we reach dad." Kyle defiantly stated. I ran my fingers through my dark tresses, even more frustrated at this new topic. It had been only a few months since my fallout with my ex-husband Henry. We both mutually decided it was best to part ways, as we argued constantly and could never agree on anything but a divorce.
My momentary silence only seemed to make Kyle more persistent as he began his endless nagging. "Kyle... I don't know when..." I muttered as I tried to keep my focus on the winding road.
"Well then let me call dad and ask." At this point Kyle's answer bothered me to the point where I felt like banging my head against the window. I had clearly not gotten enough sleep last night and it was even worse that there seemed to be no coffee at the motel we stayed at either. This family trip was really wearing me out.
Soon enough we reached my ex-husbands house and I stayed in the car to watch them ring the doorbell. Kyle held his fluffy teddy bear tightly with one hand, and held Lily with the other. I hugged them one last time before they walked to the door, and told them I loved them. I knew the divorce was hard on them and regretted not being able to be strong enough to pull through the relationship.
After a few seconds of ringing the doorbell, I saw a skinny, tall man with a slight stubble embrace my kids. I immediately recognized him as my ex-husband and saw how much he had changed. His usually clean shaved face had a stubble, and his neat hair was messed up, as if he had just woken up. I coldly glanced at him before backing out of the driveway and waving to my kids. Once they waved back, I didn't look back and left.
