The sky seemed to turn darker by the minute and I instantly regretted not staying at the motel with the kids longer . I had no option as my company needed me to attend a important meeting with the CEO the next day. I even had to drop them at their dad's house a bit earlier for that reason.

I sighed in exhaustion and blinked my eyes quickly, trying to stay awake. I glanced at my rearview mirror and saw a bunch of new blankets I had bought before the trip piled in the backseat.  I realized it was Kyle and Lily's "mini fort" they had made while they were bored in the car. A small smile crept onto my face before I once again turned my attention to the straight road.

It was only a few minutes later that it turned so dark outside that I could barely make out anything on the empty road. I noticed I had reached a desolate forested area, as the roads became slightly more bumpier and harder to drive on.

I turned on the radio in hopes of staying awake, however I found it futile as it made my eyes sag even more. The straight road seemed almost like a dream as my eyes fought to stay awake. My eyes started to turn bleary and I could feel my already red eyes release a few tears. I could hear the singer on the radio sing softly as if she, too, wanted my eyes to close and rest. Without realizing it, I relaxed my tight grip on the steering and felt myself slump against my seat. My eyes closed for a few brief seconds, relishing the darkness and the comfort as they no longer throbbed.

Slowly opening my eyes, I noticed a deer standing in the middle of the road I was driving on, only a few feet away from my car. I felt my eyes widen, and I immediately tried to steer around the deer, fearing my speed of the car would kill it if I touched it. All of a sudden, I felt something bump against the back tires of the car and felt myself lose control. I narrowly missed the light brown colored deer and frantically tried to steer the car back onto the road. However, I quickly noticed it was impossible to do so. My car sped off of the road and down the forest hill that I was desperately trying to avoid. Everything around me shook inside the car, as it obeyed the laws of gravity.

At that moment I remembered my kids and ex-husband. I remembered us laughing at Kyle's antics and eating happily at the park. I remembered that one happy moment we had together as a family, and remembered it as the last happy moment I had with him.

As I saw my car slam into the big, redwood tree, I only prayed that I could see my kids one last time. I prayed that I could hold them one last time. But it seemed as if god didn't listen to my wishes, and as my car hit the old redwood tree, I was dead.
