My world was slowly crumbling down before my face. The colour faded from my face and my fingers were slightly shaking. I had to fold my palm into a fist to stop the shaking. I turned cold as I looked at Miss Layla emotionless.
I can't go to jail.
"Ma'am, I don't know what you're talking about." I feigned nonchalance as I looked at her with a blank expression.
She laughed. She actually laughed a throaty laugh, looked at me like I was the most stupid person on earth and went back laughing. I smiled. I don't know why I did it but I just found the corners of my mouth rising in a smile.
"Young man, what do you take me for? A rich spoilt good for nothing daddy's girl? Is that it?" She questioned looking at me with disgust in her gaze. She looked pained but when I caught the look on her face she masked it right away.
"Ma'am, that's not what I said. I'm asking you to reconsider your words. Maybe you confused me with someone else. You may not believe me now but I'll prove to you that I am not a bad person." I was actually convincing myself not her. I needed the money right now. I had nowhere else to turn to if she decided to fire me.
"As I said, I am not an entirely heartless person, soldier. I will give you a chance, just don't let me regret it."
I thanked her and exited the office in a jittery mess. The entire day went out as a blur. It was meeting after meeting. Her efficiency on the job was a trait to be imitated. Her skills were exemplary and everyone else was happy with her. Aside from the respect that the employees offered her, they adored her hard work though they still feared her.
It was eight in the evening and almost everyone on the twentieth floor had left to go home. My mind wandered back to the events of the early morning. How she had known I was a soldier yet kept calm about the entire ordeal. Now that I thought about it, her face looked quite familiar, but then again she was a famous billionaire with her face on billboards and magazines.
I logged off my computer after updating Miss Layla's schedule and went to tell her I was going home. She wished me a safe journey and went back to do her work. As I got out of the building, I bumped into her boyfriend who seemingly had come to pick her up. When I got home, I plopped on the couch and released a sigh. I decided to call Trevor and update him about everything. He was my outside man. In cases like these, he was the one who fixed my issues so that at the end of the day we all get our share. Trevor warned me to be more careful so that we don't expose ourselves. After settling everything down, I went to sleep and hoped tomorrow will be better. As I closed my eyes I could only focus on her face before sleep entirely overtook me.
