Chapter 3 - Survival

I jolted awake, frantically looking around. I hadn't meant to fall asleep - last night had taught me that sleep was dangerous.

It made you vulnerable, and that was something I couldn't afford to be, if I wanted to win, and at the moment I did want to win. I wanted to beat them, prove them wrong.

I wanted to survive.

Then, I wanted to kill them.

I picked up my rucksack and pulled my water bottle out, taking a small sip. There wasn't that much left. I looked around - I was in a cold, barren wasteland that was somewhere west of Moscow, in the unforgiving Russian landscape.

I picked my bag up and looked at my little keyring compass. I bought it at the airport when we first arrived in Russia, I wanted it because it was pretty. I never thought I would need to use it. I never thought anything like this would happen.

I decided that I would think about it like it was a game, perhaps it would help to detach myself from the whole thing.

Winning would mean getting that little white envelope to London. Winning would mean not being caught. Not being killed.

Losing... Wasn't an option.

I vaguely knew my geography - from all those flights my dad and I went on, I learned the landscape, but this was different - I had never had to account for my own stamina when flying. Now I had to.

I knew that the way out of Russia was south-west from Moscow. I would then either end up in Poland or Romania, but If I took at direct route to one of those countries, I would not reach a town before I ran out of water. My other option was to try to reach the coast and follow it. I decided upon the coast - it was a much better option, as I needed to find civilisation by tomorrow or I would die of thirst. That, and the problem that I could get lost if I took the quick route.

Maybe if I found a town I would even find a place where I could eat and relax, or even a warm place to spend the night...

I needed to stop indulging myself with thoughts like this, and instead try to get there.

I looked into the distance, seeing nothing. I sighed, and put one foot in front of the other, and let my mind wander.
