elena sat in the front of defense against the dark arts class with alison and luke.
this had always been her favorite class because she was so good at it. she worked hard to study and practice all of the spells that she was taught. she wanted to be able to protect her friends if danger came their way.
mad-eye moody took over the class as the new teacher but something about the man just seemed... off. you could say that his teaching style was definitely unique. nevertheless, he stood at the front of the classroom, getting ready to teach.
"alastor moody. ex-auror. ministry malcontent, and your new defense against the dark arts teacher. i'm here because dumbledore asked me. end of story, goodbye, the end. any questions?"
before anyone dared to reply to his question, the door to the classroom burst open and everyone turned around to see who was late on the first day of school. elena turns around and looks back at the two boys taking their seats in an empty desk.
"ah, malfoy. i believe you and your friend... what's his name?" moody asks.
"hood. i'm calum hood, sir." calum states, sitting down beside draco.
"right. i believe you boys could do a little better on time. no point in signing up for a class if you don't plan on going to it, hm?" moody grumbles as he gets ready for his lesson. "when it comes to the dark arts, i believe in a practical approach..." he begins.
but elena didn't hear him. she was still looking back at the durmstrang boy sitting beside draco malfoy. there was something about him that just made him so incredibly nice to look at. maybe it was the way his soft curls sat on top of his head, hanging down just above his eyes. maybe it was how his school uniform fit his body just right, making it too easy to see his large biceps through his long sleeve shirt.
despite whatever it was that drew her eyes to calum, he noticed quickly that she was staring. and that boy stared right back.
being the hufflepuff that she is, elena wasn't bold enough to continue their staring contest, especially while in class. she blinked a few times, looking down at the floor then back up to the teacher.
"so, which curse shall we see first? weasley!" moody yells at the ginger sitting at the table beside elena.
"yes!" ron jumps, obviously frightened by the professor like everyone else in the class.
"stand," moody orders him. "give us a curse."
ron stands slowly. "well," he gulps. "my dad did tell me about one... the imperius curse?"
"oh yeh, your father would know all about that. gave the ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago." moody nods, looking around at the young faces sitting before him. "perhaps this will show you why."
elena leans forward in her seat as moody walks over to the table containing all sorts of creatures. he carefully removes the glass top and takes out a dark brown spider.
alison gasps as he mutters the incantation to make the spider bigger, floating it across the classroom closer to the students. he makes the spider land on top of vincent crabbe's head, causing him to scrunch his face together in disgust. everyone in the class erupts with laughter.
draco points at his friend and laughs. moody takes no time to move the spider and land it on malfoy's face. "what are you laughing at?" the teacher laughs.
elena, alison and luke all laugh as they watch draco frantically swat at the spider.
"get it off, get it off!" draco begs. calum sits back and chuckles, watching his new friend suffer.
