the next day, elena was nowhere to be found.
calum arrived at breakfast and searched the entire hufflepuff table with no luck. fortunately, he did find alison and luke to whom he approached.
"hey guys, do you know where elena is?" he asks, sitting down beside luke. the hufflepuff boy's eyes go wide, but he keeps them fixated on the plate of food in front of him, careful not to make eye contact.
"she's not coming to breakfast." alison answers from across the table, giving calum a small glare.
"oh. why not? is she sick?" calum asks.
"yeah, sick of your lies!" alison replies, causing a few other students at their table to turn their attention to them.
"what are you talking about?"
"what do you think?"
"i don't know. last night elena told me to wait for her while she went to her room but she never came back." calum frowns.
"oh she came back," alison nods, raising her eyebrows. "she came back and heard you talking to malfoy."
calum grows pale, his expression going blank. his eyes go wide with the realization that elena heard his conversation with draco. she heard their plans and most likely put together that they're both working for voldemort. he only hoped that she also heard the part where he told draco he didn't want to be a death eater. calum was trying to change. trying to escape the world of malice and death. he didn't want to be a death eater and hurt others. he wanted out.
"listen, no matter what she told you, please understand i'm not the bad guy here." he says, looking between luke and alison. luke remained timid and alison continued shooting daggers with her eyes.
"you listen to me," ali leans forward on her elbows. "elena is my best friend and you're not gonna hurt her anymore than you already have. so stay away from her."
calum sighs and shakes his head, getting up from the table and quickly walking out of the great hall. they didn't understand, but he knew elena would. although he was unable to go into the hufflepuff common room, he would see her in class, so he waited in the potions classroom.
once breakfast ended and first period started, students began filing into the classroom. calum bit his lip, nervously waiting for his girlfriend to enter. before she could, professor snape walks in and shuts the door.
"turn your books to page 394."
calum looks around the room, surprised to see that elena is missing class. did she want to avoid him so bad that she would skip a lesson?
"mr hood, your book is front of you, not behind your shoulder. page 394." snape scolds.
calum purses his lips and turns his attention to his potions book, flipping to the correct page.
without elena, class was more boring than ever. after potions, calum had a free period which he spent waiting outside of the hufflepuff common room, hoping the girl he desperately needed to see would emerge from the door. i mean, she had to eat at some point, right? luckily, the durmstrang boy had no more classes for the day so he had the rest of the day to sit and wait for elena. when it had been a few hours and there was still no sign of her, calum had an idea.
he got up from his spot on the ground and walked to the other side of the castle towards the astronomy tower. he quickly ascended the stairs and stopped when he made it to the top. her back was to him, but he could recognize her hair anywhere. she leaned against the railing, looking out to the black lake.
"el?" calum gently asked.
she turned around and looked at him, her face showing a multitude of emotions. hurt, betrayal, fright, anger. elena was too overwhelmed to know how to feel.
"did ali tell you i was here?" she asks.
calum shakes his head, taking a step forward. "i know you like to come here to think. besides, i'm pretty sure ali and luke hate me now."
elena looks her boyfriend up and down. she had to admit, even when she was disgusted with him, he still managed to look as sexy as ever. then turns back around with a sigh, her eyes returning to the landscape once again.
"do you?" calum asks, slowly take more steps towards her.
"do i what?"
"hate me." he clarifies, now standing at her side. elena turns to meet his eyes, frowning gently.
"i could never hate you, calum. i just can't believe you lied to me."
"i didn't lie!"
"that night after the yule ball, you told me you weren't a death eater. however, that skull on your arm says different," she says, pointing to his wrist. "then finding out that you had been planning cedric's death all along made me feel awful. i have been defending you since you got here, telling everyone that you weren't as bad as they thought, that the rumors about you were just that- rumors, and you were actually the softest, most sweetest boy i've ever met. how could you do this to me, cal?"
by the end of her declamation, tears were forming in elena's eyes. she didn't want to cry, especially in front of calum, but she couldn't help it.
"and before i forget, here." she says, slipping the ring calum had gifted her not too long ago off of her finger and dropping it into his hand. "you can have this back."
calum looks at her with a pained face. "no! please give me a chance to explain. it's not what you think."
elena purses her lips, trying to decide whether or not she should give him another chance. he had caused her alot of pain, but hearing him out was the right thing to do.
"fine."
calum takes a deep breath. "when i first told you about my... situation after the yule ball, i was telling the truth about not being a death eater, and i'm still not officially apart of the group. the triwizard tournament was a test for me and draco. they wanted to see if we had what it takes, and what you heard last night was me telling draco i don't. hurting people is something i never wanted to do. when i first got here, i continued to keep my distance from igor because i knew he'd try to use me if he could. he used draco instead, but they still want me to be with them," he pauses, slipping his hand under elena's fingers to hold her hand. "i feel terrible about what happened to cedric, but i want you to know i never wanted any of it to happen. i would never hurt you, el. i love you."
elena's eyes go wide as calum finishes speaking, his last words lingering in the air. "y-you love me?" she asks. calum nods.
"like, love love?"
"yes, like love love." he chuckles, taking another step towards her.
elena lets go of his hand and wraps her arms around his neck. "i like love love you too, calum." she smiles.
he giggles and leans in, pressing his lips against hers. making out under the moonlight in the astronomy tower? definitely something the couple would do again.
"does that mean you'll put this back on?" calum asks, holding up the ring once he pulls away.
"of course." elena smiles and holds out her hand, letting the boy slide the gorgeous piece of jewelry back onto her finger.
"i'm so glad i met you, el. you're different. a good different, of course. i think you're the best thing that could have happened to me." calum admits, smiling at his girlfriend.
elena's bottom lip began to quiver as her eyes gleamed in admiration of her boyfriend, forever grateful to have met calum hood, the durmstrang student.
