The clock stroked midnight with the full moon high in the sky and a distant wolf within the dark forest howling into the late night. The castle was quiet, not a sound was heard except for the crackling fire torches lighting up the hallways. Not even the slightest squeak from the mice who've found homes within the walls and cracks around the castle.

Up in Gryffindor tower, the atmosphere was exactly the same, quiet and warm from the roaring fire that was lighting and heating the common room. However, the four friends descended from their dorms and made their way down the stairs and across the room. A faint croaking noise and they stop in their tracks and turn around, finding Trevor, Neville's pet toad.

"Trevor." Harry said looking down at the amphibian.

"Trevor shh! Go, you shouldn't be here." Ron stated.

"Well, technically... neither should we. But... you know, let's break the rules and solve a mystery." Angelica said. The three friends looked at her, unsure if she was joking or being serious.

"This was your idea." Ron said looking at her.

"Well, technically, Harry was the one who suggested it. Either way, doesn't mean you should listen to me." Angelica fired back.

"You're sneaking out, again aren't you?" Neville said as he appeared in a chair.

"Now, Neville, listen. We were." Harry started, trying to come up with a reasonable excuse but Neville interrupted him before he could do so.

"No! I won't let you!" Neville said as he stood up and stood his ground.

"You'll get Gryffindor in trouble again! I'll fight you." He continued, holding his fists.

"Neville, I'm really, really sorry about this" Hermione said as she drew her wand out from her robes. "Petrificus Totalus." Hermione said.

Neville froze and fell backwards onto the ground and put her wand but into her robe pocket. Angelica smiled at her, satisfyed with the outcome, while harry and Ron looked at each other, a little nervous.

"You're a little scary sometimes, you know that? brilliant, but scary." Ron said. Causing Harry and Angelica to laugh.

"Let's go." Harry said as he walked past Neville. "Sorry."

"sorry." Hermione said following Harry.

"Sorry." Ron said following Hermione.

"It's for your own good, you know." Angelica said as she followed her friends out of the common room and towards the third floor.

Deep within the castle, the potion master had a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach as he was walking in the dark, doing his patrolling. As he rounded yet another corner, he saw a silhouette of a figure. He stopped in his tracks and waited in the shadows observing, trying to figure out if the figure was another staff member, a rebellious child or something else. As the figure walked closer and closer towards the candle light pick, which was hanging on the wall, the mysterious person became clearer and clearer.

Severus stared intently as professor Quirrell walked through the hall and on the same route towards the third floor. Severus wasted no time to follow the traditor, as a staff member and head of house, it was his responsibility to ensure the safety of his students and staff of Hogwarts. As he was following him, he had no idea that his daughter was also on her way to prevent the same professor of his selfish objectives.

The four friends hid under Harry's invisibility cloak and snuck out of the common room and to the third floor. They entered the corridor and made their way to the end of the hallway where the door which contained the giant dog and trapdoor were behind.
