Chapter four: Running

I woke up in my bed by the sunlight coming through the window. I stretched and blinked a couple of times to get used to the light. I sat up in bed and my feet landed on the hardwood floor on my room. My right arm was a bit sore from lying on it strangely, but besides that, everything was alright.

As soon as I stood up I was punched back down. When I looked up I could see Harold. He smiled his vicious smile and smacked me across the face. I got so scared and started crying. He was holding some handcuffs he had used a couple of times before. I hated them. I hated being bound or somehow deprived freedom.

Harold grabbed my arms and cuffed them to the headboard above my head. He had me lie down before taking my shorts off. I gave me strokes and slaps. Sometimes he was gentle, sometimes rough, but I always feared him and what he might do next. Tears started runing down my face and onto my pillow. I was so scared. I tried to kick him but all he did was smile and held my legs down. I started screaming like crazy when he unbuttoned his pants. I knew what was going to happen next. I kicked and screamed as loud as I could. I was hoping my mum would hear and maybe call the police. Though I doubted she would ever do that for me. She loved Harold and not me.

“Cassidy!” I heard from the hallway. But it wasn’t my mum’s voice, or Jeff’s. It was a familiar one, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I didn’t really have time to wonder who it was. I wanted that person to come in here and help me. The voice kept shouting out my name so I tried calling for help louder so they would know what room I was in.

Suddenly I was ripped up from my bed, and like for a miracle the cuffs weren’t on my hands. I was sitting on the edge of my bed, and was shaking like crazy. It felt as if someone else was shaking me. I suddenly realized my eyes were closed and when I opened them I came face to face with two dark eyes. I became quiet but kept staring into the eyes and felt like I was drowning in those black lakes. I didn’t mind though, it felt warm and cozy, but yet so cold.

“Cassidy, what happened?” Snape asked. He actually seemed concerned.

“I-I guess I was having a nightmare,” I said and looked down at my intertwined fingers. He had one hand on my back and his other on his knee. “Did I wake you up?” I wasn’t certain of the time since I couldn’t see my alarm clock properly from here, and there were no windows.

“I’d be surprised if you haven’t woken up the whole castle, Miss Blake. Now what were you dreaming about?” he asked. Why was he being so nice to me?

“Nothing,” I said, and didn’t look up.

“Well, I guess it’s none of my business. I hope to have the rest of the night uninterrupted, so I suggest you solve your issues before going back to sleep.” He said as he stood up and took a couple of steps back. It happened again; his sudden change of character. What was going on with him?

“I’m sorry sir,”

“Yes, you should be. I understand you have double potions before lunch tomorrow morning, and you will see why my sleep is important to me. Do not disturb me more,” he said and walked out of the room.

I was left in utter shock. I reached for my alarm clock and saw it was five thirty in the morning. I didn’t see a reason to go back to sleep now I was wide awake, so I went on to find myself my workout clothes and I slipped out of my room. The hallways were dark and even colder than my room was, so I quickly put in my hoodie, and kept on up the stairs. I knew I wasn’t allowed to be wandering the halls during the night, but I had to get out for a little exercise.

As soon as I was out of the castle I started running towards the forbidden forest. Just as I was about to enter it I remembered what Dumbledore had said in his speech about the forbidden forest being forbidden. I turned to the right and ran along the edge of the forest. I could hear sounds from within the darkness of the trees. It was still pitch black outside, so when I reached Hagrid’s cabin I turned up and towards the castle.

I reached the castle but decided it wasn’t enough. It had only been about fifteen minutes. I ran around the castle. Its big silhouette was magnificent against the dark blue, yet starry sky. The moon was covered with clouds, but I could see it was only half.

I kept running towards the lake, and ran along the edge of it too. I was losing my breath but I kept pushing myself as hard as I could. I needed to get the memory from the dream out of my head. My legs were sore, and I was sweating like crazy. I ran until I reached the point where a river becomes the lake, and ten I turned around, running back.

When I reached the tree by the lake I could feel how light headed I was. I hadn’t eaten anything since in the train just after noon. Still, now was the first of me feeling any hunger pains. Even though I felt as if I was about to pass out, I forced my feet to keep running towards the castle, though I decreased my speed as I got near it.

I was walking slowly as I reached the steps, and I just about managed to walk up to the door. My heart was racing, and I got a little dizzy. Still I went down to the dungeons. When I closed the door I looked at the clock on my night stand and it read 7.45. I jumped into the shower, washed my hair and sweat away, before getting out and drying my hair quickly. I managed to put on some make up and comb my hair before grabbing my bag with the books in it, and headed out.

I just managed to get a toast at breakfast before following professor McGonagall to the transformation classroom. I didn’t know where it was, but I smoothly tried to keep up with her without it seeming as I was following her. I was the first one to get there, as so she asked me to come to her desk.

“Miss Blake. I do hope you like your private quarters?” she spoke softly, as if she might break me with another tone. I nodded slowly and gave her a fake smile. “Good. Now, you will be taking transformation with the Rawenclaws. What are you doing next period?” she asked.

“I have Magical history,” I said.

“Yes, I believe you will be taking that class with both Hufflepuffs and Rawenclaws.  What about the last two periods before lunch?” I was curious as to why she as so interested in my education. I answered her question none the less and told her I had double potions. She told me I was having that with the Gryffindors and Slytherins.

At that moment the other kids started coming through the door and I was glad I could now go and take my seat.

We were assigned to transform a real life frog into a plate. It was only the first period of the year, but it was so simple. I learned that in my second or third year. I transformed it with a flick of my wand and a word. I looked around me and saw the others struggle a bit with it, but soon everyone had a plate on their desks.

“Great. I see you haven’t forgotten anything. 15 points to Rawenclaw,” Professor McGonagall said and earned cheers from the class. I smiled at their happiness. Dumbledore had explained the house cup championship last night.

Soon we were dismissed and I followed the Rawencalws to magical history. The class went by fast, and I didn’t really have to pay attention since I had already covered that material. I guess I did better at my old school than I had thought. Still I only barely passed my exams.

I knew where the potions class room was, so I walked slowly to the dungeons. I was really tired, but still a little high on endorphins from my run this morning.

Magical history was on the fourth floor, so it took me a while to get to the dungeons, especially when the stairs kept moving away when I got near them. Once I just barely jumped onto a step before it moved away. This floor plan was quite frustrating.

When I reached the entrance hall I knew I was late, but somehow I didn’t feel the need to run to class. Actually, I rather felt the need to lie down on the spot and go to sleep. Still, I forced myself down the stairs and opened the door to the potions classroom. It was filled with students, and at the front stood Professor Snape. I saw he was not happy with the disturbance.
