Chapter five: Unexpected punishment

“Miss Blake. How nice of you to join us,” he said with venom in his voice. I guess interrupting his sleep on the first night of school was not a smart move on my part. But it’s not like I can control my nightmares right?

“I’m sorry for being late sir,” I said as I found an empty seat next to the Weasley twins. Fred smiled at me and George rolled his eyes.

“Good, but sorry doesn’t cover the disturbance you caused the class. Fifteen points from Gryffindor,” his cold voice and empty eyes were focused on me.

“What? Sir, I’m not in Gryffindor. I’m not even in a house for that matter, you know that,” I said shocked. There was no need to punish other students for my mistake.

“Right. Miss Blake, you will come to my office tonight for a detention, and remind me deduct points as soon as you are assigned to a house,” Snape said and then continued with his class.

I got myself a detention on the first day of school. Well done Cass, great move. Fred gave me a sympathetic look and touched my hand before I pulled it away. He looked quite shocked, but I just couldn’t stand having anyone touch me.

“Potions is a fine art of magic. One mistake can cost someone’s life. One mistake can make a big difference. It usually does not include a silly flick if your wand, so some don’t think it is real magic, but it is powerful.” Somewhere towards the end of his little speech, I put my head down to my desk and dozed off.

I felt as if I had been asleep for hours when a book slammed on the table in front of me. “Miss Blake, this is not your bed. Do you think your potion will blend itself in your cauldron? I hope your senses are more than that you insolent girl,” he venom in Snape’s voice was more than before. I guess the lack of sleep did this to him. Or he was just mean. Either way I looked up in shock.

“No sir, I’m sorry sir,” I said and looked down to my table.

“We are making a simple cure for boils. I hope the last school you were in was able to teach you at least that,” he said. I fought back tears. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing he had hurt me.

“Yes sir,” I said and he walked away. I could see that everyone was already started, and some students had already put most of the ingredients in. I quickly got what I needed and started mixing it.

“Don’t you have to use your book? You know Snape can get worse of you fail,” Fred whispered with worry in his voice. I just shook my head and told him I knew how to do this.

I was done just before anyone else. Snape gave me a smirk and walked towards me. “What disaster have you cooked up here Miss Blake? I don’t believe you’re already done.”

“Actually sir, I am done.” I said and showed him the light green potion I had made in matter of minutes.

“I guess this is right. But you have earned yourself another detention on Monday night for sleeping in my class.” Snape walked back to the front of class. “Class dismissed.”

I stood up quickly and walked with Fred and George to the Great hall for lunch.

“What a bastard,” Fred said as he sat down next to me with George on the other side of the table.

“I disobeyed,” I whispered to myself.

“What?” Fred said. I told him it was nothing; I was just talking to myself. And I was. I hoped to god that whatever Professor Snape was going to do to me, it wouldn’t be too bad. I was scared, but I couldn’t let anyone see that. I just plastered a big fake smile on my face and talked to Fred and George for the rest of lunch.
