Wolf Valley Saga: Coming Home

Chater:8

I look up and it's Rane. I feel his arms holding me and the heat and intensity of the sun is way too much. I pass back out. When I come to, it's around noon I look around my bedroom. He is sitting in a chair in the corner, picking at his jeans. I sit up. He notices me moving and stands up. 

"You are okay? Time for me to leave then." He walks out the door. I hear the screen door slam behind him. For him to always be rude to me, you would think he would like knowing I was in that much pain. I get up and everything seems to be alright. I head out the door to go get my uniform. This time I decide to drive my car.

On the way there I listen to my favorite band, The Wallows. They are really good. I've tried to tell Allie to listen to them, but she would rather just stick to Taylor Swift.We definetly havr different taste in music. 

After a short drive I arrive at the front gate. I park and notice Avery's patrol car is out front. I wonder why he is here. He is in the office with Dan in a heated argument with the door closed. I wish I could hear them.

When Avery sees me he comes out he says, "Well hey stranger."

"Hey Avery! Is something wrong?"

"Oh that? Dan is an old friend. Just a difference in opinions is all. So what are you doing ?"

"I came to pick up my uniform."

"How about dinner again tonight?"

"Sure. Same time same place?" I answer. He nods his head yes gives me a kiss on the cheek before he leaves. I grab my uniform. 

When I start to walk out the door, Dan yells, "See you tomorrow Kendra!" I wave as I walk out the door and get in my car.I drop off the water sample at the post office. I get back home and Pops is home early, which is strange. I walk in to investigate.

"Pops, what are you doing home so early?"

"Oh no reason. Just finished early. Is that okay? And I have a date tonight." He chuckles.

"Me too. I need some shoe polish. Where is yours?" 

"Up in the attic in a box marked my bedroom." 

I laid my uniform on the bed and pulled the chain for the attic. The stairs came down quick and pounded against the floor. Pops came running up the stairs. "Are you okay, V? I forgot to tell you about the stairs. I am so sorry."

"I am fine, Pops. It just scared the ba-Jesus out of me is all."

I climb the stairs and look through the boxes. I stumble upon one that said Mariaha on it. I rub my hand across the box. I miss her so much. I open the box. When I get to the bottom, there is a book in it. I open it and it is a diary of Mom's. I turn around and see the box Pops was talking about. I grab the shoe polish out of it. I climb down and close the attic. I set the shoe polish on my bed and then walk downstairs to show Pops what I found.

"Pops look what I found! It's a journal of mom's." He pulls it from my hands.

"I can't let you read that, Kendra. That was your mom's personal thoughts."

"But Pops please? Can I read it? I wanna know her thoughts. Please?" I beg him but he only got upset at me.

"No, Kendra Valley Bane. Don't ask again. The answer is always gonna be no. Got it?" He just yelled at me... He hasn't done that since I was ten, when mom passed away. He apologized to me for an hour and promised he would never do it again. He explained he was upset that Momma was gone and took it out on me without thinking. Then he pulled me on his lap and squeezed me till I could barely breath. That makes me want to read that diary even more. He has no reason to act like that. I notice the time and go get ready for my date. I look through the closet and pull out a red summer dress. I shower then get dressed. Me and Pops leave at the same time.

I get to the restaurant on time. I wait a few minutes. The hostess goes ahead and seats me. Avery walks in and sees me. He comes over and sits down. Half way through dinner I ask him, "Avery I want to ask you something. Someone said they seen you  slipping something in my beer that night at the bar. Did you put something in my beer?"

He gets upset. "That is absurd Kendra. They probably seen me putting salt in my beer is all. " I think back to that night and I never once saw him put salt in his beer. He was lying and I knew it. He gets a call and said, "I have to go back to the office. I am so sorry Kendra." He explains he is so sorry and gets up and leaves. I head over to the Sportsmen's Bar. I sit and drink a few beers. Why would he lie to me? I stop drinking because I am starting to get a buzz and head home. 

When I get there Pops is still gone, so I go search his room for the diary. I found it in between his mattresses. I go hide it in my room. I go for a walk down the street and run into Dane.

 "Hey what are you doing?" I question him. 

"Just needed to think about things know, what I mean? How about you?" he asks me as I walk beside him.

"Same here." I start cramping in my stomach again. I grab Dane's shoulder for support. "Walk me back home please?" We get half way to my house and the next thing I know, Rane is picking me up again but this time I am alert. I look into his beautiful green eyes. I have never noticed them until now. "You know you have the prettiest green eyes, Rane. I never noticed them before now." I scream out in pain as a sharp pain goes through my side.

"It's okay, V. I got you. You are okay. It is just your wolf is fully awake and is trying to bust out." I scream out in pain. "Control your breathing. It should help. Breathe out. In. An now out," he says as he walks into the house with me in his arms. He takes me to my bedroom and lays me on my bed. He starts to walk out, but he turns around when I scream out in pain. He rushes back to my side. I can feel tears rolling down each side of my face.

"Please, don't leave me, Rane." He wipes my tears from my face.

"I won't. I am here, V." He runs his hand down the side of my face. Dane walks in.

"Oh boy. You are in for a long night. Can I get you two anything?" I shake my head no. 

I try to talk to Rane. "I had a date tonight with Avery and..." I scream out in pain again.

"I know, V. I have been able to hear your thoughts since I was sixteen.Now shush and concentrate on your breathing." The pain lasted a couple of hours. 

When I started feeling better, I told them, "You both can go home now and thank you both for helping me. I really appreciate it." I sit up in the bed. Rane makes a quick exit. I hear the screen door slam shut.

"Do you need anything before I go, V?"

"No. Go home Dane. It is really late. I will be fine. I am going to sleep because I have work in the morning." He walks out of the house and shuts the front door behind him. I hear the screen door slam and get up and go lock the door. I get just a couple hours of sleep that night. I think about how Rane said he has been hearing my thoughts since we were sixteen. I blush. That is a lot of my personal life he has insider information to, especially the thoughts of him in sophomore year. I fall asleep.
