Chapter Five: Work

I wake up to the smell of breakfast. Bacon, eggs, and pancakes, yum. I stretch, and get up. Midnight stretches, looks at me, then goes back to sleep. I walk into my bathroom, brush my hair and put food and fresh water into Midnight’s bowl. I hear a tapping sound on my window I open the curtain and see Amentha. I smile and open my window so she can jump on to my shoulder. I chuckle and walk out my door and down the stairs, for breakfast.

“Good Morning” Penny says, happy and skipping around the kitchen flipping pancakes and eggs, without a care in the world.

“Morning” I say as I grab a glass of OJ and let Amentha out with some uncooked bacon. I sit down across from Matt.

“Where’s Angel?” I ask. “She went to work this morning. She asked us to wish her luck.” Matt says without taking his eyes off of the newspaper in his hands.

“Luck?” I scoff “Angel does know she is one, if not the best doctor in the world, right?” I ask. Matt chuckles as Penny comes in with 3 floating plates. I watch as she places each plate down with the greatest of ease. Once the plates are on the table she claps her hands and smiles triumphantly.

“You’ve been practicing.” Matt says, “I wonder who’s been teaching you?” He asks, raising an eyebrow my way.

“What?” I ask as I swallow a bite of egg.

“We can’t expect the Hunters to simply give her leave because she doesn’t know how to use her powers completely. And besides, we all know she will be the one with the best telekinesis, since she can control the wind.”

“Touché” Matt replies lifting his coffee cup, then downing it in one gulp.

“Dang Matt, pace yourself.” I say around a bite of pancake.

“Sorry, but I can’t, I have to get to work in 15 minutes, or I’ll be late, on my first day.”

“Ok. Your lunch is on the counter with your files.” Penny says before taking a bite of a bacon, pancake, and egg sandwich. Matt smiles, gets up, puts his dishes in the sink, grabs his lunch, files and keys, and walks over to us. He kisses us both on our foreheads, and says,

“Behave yourselves.”

“We will.” Penny says happily. “What are you two going to do today, anyways?” Matt asks by the garage door.

“Penny and I were planning on going into town to find a part time job and then a good place to practice. Quietly.” I add before Matt could object. He smiles,

“Good. We want to at least make it to the beginning of the school term before we move again.” I look at Penny and a silent message passes between us. Then we both give him our best innocent smiles.

“We wouldn’t dream of doing anything to jeopardize that.” I say, sarcasm underling my words. Matt rolls his eyes and gives up trying to convince us to stay out of the trouble we seem to find everywhere.

“Good bye and I love you both.” Matt says before he steps out the door.

Penny starts to giggle as soon as the door is closed. The sound is so contagious that I start as well. Soon we are both rolling on the floor laughing. We keep laughing even though our sides are hurting. The phone started to ring, and I composed myself enough to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Hi. Um, Katielena?” The other voice asked.

“Yes. Who is this?”

“Whew. Its, ah, good to hear your voice.”

“Yeah, Who Is This?” Man, whoever this is obviously doesn’t know me that well, because I hate sounding like a broken record.
