It has been six years since I left home. Every Shadow keeper must complete 175 missions during his or her first twenty years. After the first twenty, they are permitted to have a family and given the choice of continuing this line of work if they weren’t a Specialty Keeper or Royalty, like myself and my family. But even if I was given the choice, I would continue to do missions. I like to do many things, but I just can’t stick to it. That’s probably why I don’t keep my jobs for long, I get bored easily.
As I walk into the, quiet busy, main hall, I feel a pair of arms wrap around me. I leaned into the embrace thinking it was my uncle, Etheron, but the deep chuckle reverberating throughout his chest and his height were a little off. I slowly turn to face him and see that it wasn’t my uncle, but my trainee, Oliver.
Just as I’m about to welcome him to his new home I hear a sound that spikes my ire and makes me grimace in annoyance.
“Katielena, darling how are you?” chirps a too overenthusiastic voice.
“Aunty Jueada. So nice to see you again.” I say removing my best fake smile from my innovatory. I never liked this Aunt. She was always telling me what I am supposed to be doing and how ‘the apple has fallen far from the tree’.
She walks up in all her six foot, strawberry blonde, green with a gold outlining and gold pupil eyes, and fair, porcelain skin glory. She’s the princess every little girl wants to look like and live like. Her husband, Lucan Haverson, is the knight in shining armor with his sand blonde hair and violet and brown eyes set in a face that would make even a nun drool. Their three children are like little angels, note the sarcasm here. The triplets, Sarah, Angie and Jennifer, all have their fathers sand blonde hair and look exactly alike except the eyes. Sarah has violet eyes with brown pupils and outlining, Angie has violet eyes with gold outlining and pupils, and Jenn has green eyes with violet. The perfect family for the perfect girl.
Before she can embrace me my favorite aunt, Savannah, beats her to the punch.
“KATIE!” she yells; a flurry of red, black and white tackles me to the ground. We end up as a giggling sprawled mess on the floor. Oliver gives me a raised eye brow look.
“What, never heard of fun?” I giggled.
He opens his mouth to retort but it gets cut off by three bodies flying through the air crying “DOG PILE!” There was a loud “Oof!” Of air leaving bodies and then loud fits of laughter as the guys started to tickle us.
“A-a-a rcher!” My breathless plea gets cut off by a scream of laughter. I do my best to push my fourteen year old cousin off me, but it would seem that the black haired devil grew stronger since I last saw him. Then I feel another pair of hands tickling me. I look up and see green and aqua eyes hidden under copper bangs.
“Z-z-z ack!” Again I can’t plea for respite because they are relentless. I hear my aunt begging my uncle, Zedet, to knock it off. Then there is a pause in the tickling and I take the opportunity to jump up and knock both my cousins off me. I tackle my uncle and my aunt jumps up. We both race through the halls.
I look behind me and see the original culprits plus, Zedet’s son, Connor, and Zack’s brother, Logan, gaining on us. I shoot a look to my aunt, her black almost blue hair billowing behind her. We make eye contact, her light purple and brown eyes glistening with mischief. Her Power is speed, light, mind control, and pranks. She is also fire proof, so she is a great help when I practice with my flames.
We share a few thoughts until we agree on a plan. Once we come across a fork in the halls, we split. I put on more speed and am now up to thirty-five MPH. I look behind me and see Logan, Zack and Archer all after me. I smirk, put on a burst of speed and just when I lose sight of them, I jump up several flights of stairs. I’m quickly approaching my aunts and I’s safety zone, my office. Only six more hallways, and a five flights of stairs and two sets of doors and we would me home free.
