Chapter 32

I made my way back to the bar and leaned on my elbows as I watched Paul and Rachel eat their dessert. They were one of the last costumers left. I heard the door of the kitchen open and close as Michael, my colleague appeared next to me and leaned his elbows on the bar as well. He saw what I was looking at. "D'ya know that bloke?" he asked while looking at me. I nodded and spoke up without taking my eyes off Paul. "He was my first boyfriend, back in Liverpool. But then I snogged his best mate so he slapped me and he said I was a slag and we broke up." I shrugged and looked at Michael.

He raised his eyebrows. "That's some heavy shit mate." I laughed and shrugged again. "It happened back in '58."
Michael's eyebrows were still raised as he turned his body towards me. "D'ya still like 'im?" I looked at him and raised my eyebrows in return. "I dunno. I certainly miss him. And he misses me. Atleast that's what he told me." I said while rolling my eyes. Michael crossed his arms and leaned against the bar. "You have to show him what he's missing." I chuckled and lightly shoved him with my hand. "Oh shut up Michael. Y'see the girl he's with yeah? She's a model. I don't think he's missing anything." I said before walking into the kitchen and taking a glass of water, drinking it all at once.

Michael had followed me into the kitchen and scoffed at what I had just said. 'You're messin' about aren't ya?"
I walked back out of the kitchen and started putting the empty chairs on the tables."What do you mean?" I asked Michael. "Well, did ya take a good look at her face?" he said in a hushed voice. I raised my eyebrow at him and shook my head.
"She doesn't compare to you, me lady!" He said dramatically and rather loud, while he took my hand and gave it a kiss. I laughed and playfully hit his arm.

- Paul's POV -
I turned around to see who was talking so loud as I saw Alex and a guy at the back of the restaurant. He had grabbed her hand and gave it a kiss, before Alex hit him on the arm with a beautiful smile on her face. They started putting empty chairs on the tables and even when she was doing something as normal as that, she still looked breathtaking. I just couldn't take my eyes off her, while she chatted away and laughed. I was thinking back about the times when I was the one to make her happy. I frowned as the guy pulled Alex into a tight hug before letting her go and waving her goodbye while he took off his apron.

As I just stared at Alex I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I turned around and smiled at Rachel. "Sorry."
Whe had both finished our desserts so I decided to get up and go to Alex to pay for the meal instead of calling her over to our table. This way I could talk to her in private.
I excused myself and walked to the bar where Alex was wiping the counter. She looked up at me and gave me a small smile.

"Who was that?" I asked her while handing her some money, not even caring how much I gave her. She took out her notepad and calculated how much she had to return to me. "Who do you mean?" She asked while not even looking at me. She got out a small wallet and started counting.
I hesitated for a second. "Y'know. The one who just left. He seemed to make you... Happy."

Finally she looked up at me. She handed back my change. "He's a colleague. Michael 's his name. Don't worry, he's already got a girlfriend. But atleast he tells me about her." She said bitterly before continuing to wipe the counter and putting things back into place. I sighed.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about her. We're not a couple though. We're just..." I stopped to think. I didn't know what me and Rachel were. I was attracted to her, physically. But there was no spark. No fire, no passion.

Alex looked up at me. "I tried to call you the same day you left your number. But when she picked up the phone, I hung up." She shrugged and I nodded understandingly. I looked back at Rachel who made a face at me and pointed at the watch on her wrist. I turned back to Alex.

"Look, maybe you could come over for Christmas yeah? Just you and me." I looked at her with a small smile. She shook her head and sighed. "Sure. Okay." I smiled and leaned over the bar and placed a kiss on Alex' cheek. "I'll see you later then." She just nodded and continued putting things on their place. As I started to walk away she called my name. "Paul, you forgot your receipt."
I walked back to her and frowned. "They give receipts in restaurants these days?"
Alex just chuckled and gave me a folded note as she quietly said "no, they don't."

I unfolded the note which revealed a phone number, written in Alex' neat handwriting. I looked up at her and smiled.

"This time you call me." She said before disappearing into the kitchen of the restaurant.
