Chapter 11: Into the Woods

I run out the door with tears clouding my vision. I think I am walking through the door, but I can't tell. I fall and trip over the three stairs leading to the ground.

I see green - I'm hoping grass. I look down and let the tears roll down my face. My eyes adjust, and I look for a place I can be alone in.

I walk around the house to the back. The backyard is covered with trees - the woods.

I walk quickly into the woods.

"Sky!" he calls me.

I turn around. He is about 100 feet behind me, in front of the left side of the house. His mouth gapes open and his eyebrows rise. He stands up straighter and smile warmly, which seems inviting.

My lips curl up on instinct, making my smile look like the Grinch's.

I force the muscles in my face to frown. I turn away and run into the woods.

I run at vampire-speed dodging each tree that comes into my vision. I feel my tears brushing the top of my ear and absorbing into my hair.

There aren't any trees for the next 300 feet in the straight path in front of me. I look down at my quick feet and icy hands.

I stop in my tracks, sliding to a complete stop. I don't focus; I just relinquish my feelings: anger, betrayal, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

The ground beneath me turns into a skating rink. I stomp and break the ice, so I can fill in the cracks.

I point my open hand in the direction of a rather large crack. Instead of ice shooting out, the pieces push back into position working like a puzzle.

I have never done this before. I moved ice! How did that happen?

I hear loud 'THOMPS' coming from a few miles away. It must be Zac trying to come after me and apologize.

The ice disappears as I pull on it with my powerful gift. I pick my pace back up and sprint.

I don't know if I want Zac to apologize. It's obvious he still has feelings for her! I thought he loved me. He was always there for me. What did he want from me? I didn't give him anything. Maybe he wanted a slut like Aria or Rachel, who would give him what he wanted.

I run faster, picking up the face every 200 feet.

I see a clearing up ahead. It's too dark to see what it is. I slow down and begin to walk when I am enveloped in the open.

It's a small store or restaurant. I can't read the non-lit sign easily. I try to depict the letters.

I hear a low, raspy laugh, maybe a few of them. They sound very similar to each other. I continue to try and read the sign.

After a groan and more laughter, I smell something putrid. Puke?

I turn my head. There are three smelly guys, who stand around the puddle of throw-up. I close my eyes and hold my nose closed. I look back. The guys aren't near the puke. They're near me. In fact, surrounding me in a circle.

I try to be nonchalant: "Is this place open? I wasn't sure."

"They haven't been open for years," the one in the ball cap says. His hair covers his eyes and some of his nose. It is so dark. I can only see figures of people. The three people I counted earlier turns into six. Six against one?

Not fair.

Should I attack? Or should I wait for them? One of them might have a gun? What if they shoot me? What if I have to shoot them? Or will I have to be the vampire inside of me and scare them off? Or will I have to suck their blood?

"Sky," a familiar voice says.

It's not Zac.
