Chapter 21: Sparing a Life
The new alpha lunged at a still human Dean who was a little stunned and still trying to process what had just happened which slowed his reaction time letting the new alpha gain the advantage. Landing on top of Dean the alpha went straight for the kill but Dean raised his knee managing to kick the new alpha where he was most vulnerable making him flinch back and whimper. The others from the same pack where arguing on the side lines, sizing each other up and looking almost ready to jump into the ring and fight themselves - this is what Mel's scent mixed with the challenge of a fight does to wolves, especially the young.
"This is going to be a blood bath." Josh breathed as he stared at what was unraveling before him.
"Do you really think the reason the arena is red is because it was painted that way?" Liam asked his little brother.
Carter turned to him and put his hand on Josh's shoulder knowing the reality was getting to him. Dean had finally shifted into a jet black wolf making his green eyes shot out like lazers. He didn't growl or even stand in an attacking position but just stood there, moving and re adjusting his paws on the ground waiting and buying his time. It was a strange way to fight Carter thought as he watched his technique carefully hoping that if he faced him later on his observations maybe able to give him an edge. The new alpha had recovered and no sooner lunged forward nipping at Deans legs hoping to wound him immensely but Dean shifted his weight on his hind legs and leaped over the wolf charging at him.
"End him!"
"Get on with it!"
People shouted from the side lines getting annoyed by the wait they were being made to suffer. The group that lost their alpha and were now about to lose their new one were already shifting and fighting on the side, it made it difficult to know which fight to watch although the one outside of the arena was certainly more interesting than the one inside. Turning his head to see his pack fighting on the side lines was a deathly mistake.
Dean made his move and lunged at the alpha, his jaw closing in around his neck and ripping it. The blood come spraying out of the ripped throat drenching the floor in the deep red liquid that started painting the floor. Within no time the fighting that was happening just outside the arena made its way into the circle, the new alpha and beta where soon snapping at each other while the other member of the pack backed away clearly injured from the dispute. Dean stepped back unsure of really what to do while the pack elder tried to get some order.
The two new comers - although still bickering with each other - seemed to work in unison as they circled Dean and tried snapping at his legs. Two alphas was a rare thing and often only happened with twins but with the two of them Dean was going to struggle. Without thinking too much Carter stepped into the arena and shifted immediately in his dark brown wolf with black patches on his ears and feet. Growling at the two that started ganging up on Dean, Carter didn't wait to teach them a lesson. Targeting the smaller of the two Carter faked a lung making the the wold duck down and step forward making it easy for Carter to step beside him and shoved him so that he fell on his side, Carter's paw quickly came down of the wolfs side crushing his bones, making his howl out in pain but the loud growl from Dean stopped him before he could deliver the killing blow.
Leaving the wolf to his agony Carter turned to see Dean standing there above the other wolf that was now cowering before the both of them - submitting. Dean growled again and then barked loudly giving them leave from the fight and sparing their lives letting the two wolves scurry off with their lives in tacked - and most of their body - but now forever in their debts. It was now a show down between Carter and Dean.
He rolled his shoulders and lowered his body so that he was ready to pounce or move swiftly out of the way if Dean ever made his move. The two were both on the defensive and they knew it. They circled each other ignoring the cheers and screams from the alphas and betas around them, it was like it was just the two of them there in the arena with no one else. Taking a deep breath and moving his claws against the ground Carter caught Mel's sent growing stronger and could feel her trying to connect with him which only fueled his determination and focus. He stepped forward as Dean took a moment to sniff the air - obliviously picking up on Mel's scent as well - making him now within striking distance. Dean's attention came back to Carter and the two started snapping at one another, lunging while the other jumped back and rolled out of the way or clawing at one another.
It seemed like hours to Carter but he knew in reality it had been about twenty minutes and the two were both dripping blood and adding to small flood already on the floor, Carter had a small bite in his shoulder and claw marks ripping up the front of his brown coat and adding to his blood loss. Dean had a small bite in his neck that kept a steady flow of blood pooling out and a claw mark over his back with another bite on his paw. The two were struggling and with the loss of blood and their ability to heal quickly enabled until they were back in their human form, someone needed to die.
Dean seemed to almost stumble over getting thrown off his balance slightly but he quickly recovered it - but not quick enough to hide it from his opponents view. Seeing his opportunity Carter faked a lung and then dropped to the ground, keeping low as Dean pulled back and his lack off balance made him stumble. Carter took in his reaction, testing his weak spot with yet another fake lung but to a different side where Dean was less wobbly. Knowing how to end it Carter made his move and ducked under Dean's attack before knocking him in the side he proved most unbalanced making Dean stumble and fall to the ground on his side. The alpha tried to pull himself back up but with Carter's large wolf looming over him he knew the fight was over. Getting to his feet he eyed Carter cautiously and bowed his head in mercy something he has never done before.
Carter's inner wolf gained a rush of power as Dean bowed down but he still itched to kill him because of his revolt and challenge but there was something in him that made him hesitate, something he couldn't exactly explain. A wisdom in his eyes like the pack elders but with the strength and responsibilities of an alpha, a true alpha. Sometimes, not often we meet those who have seen more and been more then they appear to. An alpha of the blood. His fathers words from when he was a child floated into his mind and he soon found himself remembering a story he once told about one of the greatest blood alphas in history. He changed everything that day, they way we fight, the way a pack is run and how challenges work. He was the first to ever spare a life and because of him so many are alive, but at a great loss. An alpha of the blood who loses their mate can live on for centuries until they find her again. He didn't know why he was remembering that story but just the memory made Carter bow his head in return. The two called it a truce, but Dean stepped away leaving Carter the champion.
"Anyone else?" The pack elder called out but everyone had backed away. All but one but the bawled alpha known as Kyan wasn't making a move only staring with his arms crossed over his chest and glaring.
"Carter!" Mel's voice echoed through the arena making everyone jump to attention.
