Prologue: A birthday Surprise
I stared at myself in the mirror; my light brown hair fell in natural waves that curled into ringlets. I pulled it back away from my face with bobby pins letting a strand fall in front of my face. My eyes were a warm light brown framed with black eye linear, mascara and eye shadow giving it a smoky effect. My cheeks wore a slight blush and my skin was clear and creamy. I wore a black long-sleeve dress that clung to my curves and fell mid-thigh with black strapped heels. I would never admit it but I was happy with my appearance.
My hands shook with nerves as I clenched them into fists. It was my eighteenth birthday today and today was my official coming out party, when a young werewolf turns eighteen there is a party at the pack house known as their coming out party, today was mine. Although I wasn’t technically a werewolf since the gene skipped me leaving me human, but all of the rules still apply; live in the pack, do what your Alpha tells you and don’t do anything reckless. I was the opposite to all of those rules, I dreamed of running away and leaving this place and have since my parents died, I never do what I’m told, in fact I go out of my way just to do the opposite and I have done my fair share of stupid things my grandfather calls reckless.
Taking one final look in the mirror I pulled my two fingers to my lips and placed a kiss on my fingers before touching the photo that hung in the top corner of my mirror, it was a picture of my mum, dad, brother and me; I was only about five and missing my two front teeth while my brother was about nine. It was the last photo ever taken of my family, a few days later they died, attacked by a small group of rouge moon wolves trying to make a name for themselves.
I came out of my room and saw my grandfather with his head in two hands siting at the small round kitchen table. “Hey pop, are you ready?” I asked grabbing my nude coloured handbag and hanging it on my shoulder.
“I’m sorry but I won’t be going with you tonight” I stopped in my tracks; my pop never lets me anywhere near that house without being glued to his side. What was up with him? The look on his face as he looked at me was like he was attending my funeral.
“Are you sure?” I questioned looking back at him with a wide eyed expression.
“I’m sure, and Melody, be careful ok” He was starting to have me worried now.
“Sure Pop” I walked over to the door, and put my hand on the door handle.
“I love you Mel, remember that” I nodded and walked out feeling like I had left something behind.
A voice in my head was screaming at me to run back into my house and hide under my bed. The sound of a car horn caught my attention and I saw my two best friends sitting in the car, they waved their hands out the window at me, screaming for me to hurry up and get in the car. My thoughts forgotten I ran over to the car and got in to the hot pink bug, it was cramped but it bet walking all that way.
“Oh my god, happy birthday, ok so we are getting you blind drunk tonight.” Stella said as she patted my knee from the front seat while Julie drove her car.
“Thanks but I don’t want to get blind drunk ok” but I had every intention of getting tipsy, I just wanted to be able to remember tonight.
“A little bit drunk” she asked. Yeah like there was such a thing as a little bit drunk!
“Yes, a little bit” I said with a smile, hey I was eighteen I was going to at least have a little fun.
It was about a fifteen minute drive until we finally got there, the three story building stretched out across the meadow, made of dark red bricks with a black framed windows and doors with a black pointed roof. Green vines travelled up one side and the black gates were patterned with iron vines. The meadow the house was on stretched vast and wide with a few pine trees before ending in the dark forests known as the whispering woods. It was a beautiful house if you could get past the dark eeriness of the first glances.
