September 1st came and Remus found himself wandering through the busy Platform 9 3⁄4 with his mum and dad. His father gave him a stiff wave, whilst his mother enveloped him in a hug, telling him that she loved him, that she was proud of him, and that if he ever wanted to come home, he could. He waved goodbye, entering the ever-crowded train. After much pushing and shoving, he had finally found an empty compartment. Relaxing, he put his trunk away. A girl popped in asking,
"Is this seat taken?"
Remus said smiling, trying to be as friendly as possible,
"No, go ahead."
"Thanks. My name is Lily Evans. What's yours?"
"Oh, er...my name is Remus...Remus Lupin."
The two chatted for a bit before a gaunt boy with greasy hair pulled Lily away. On her way out, she said,
"It was nice to meet you, Remus."
Once again, Remus was left alone until 3 boys came running in and introduced themselves after basically begging to sit in his compartment.
"Hey mate, I'm James Potter."
Said a tall, brown, brown-haired and eyed, glasses-wearing pure blood. The second boy to enter squeaked,
"I'm Peter Pettigrew."
He was a very stout boy. The last boy to enter was a bit shorter than Potter, but much more handsome.
"And I'm Sirius Black."
Remus had heard that name before. He was Sirius Black of the famous pure blood, noble, and Most Ancient House of Black and, bloody hell, was he beautiful. He flaunted shoulder-length, black, wavy hair, bright blue eyes, and a mischievous grin on his face.
The boys sat together; talking, and getting to know one another the whole way to Hogwarts. They laughed, told jokes, and before they knew it, they had vowed to be best friends. They journeyed across the lake and made it to sorting.
Entering the hall nervously, they heard Professor Dumbledore explain what would happen during sorting. The first of their group to be called was Sirius.
"Black, Sirius,"
Professor McGonagall called out. The hat began,
"Another Black, I see. Slytheri—wait! I see something different in this one. Ambitious, yes, but the courage I see to be one's true self. Better be GRYFFINDOR!"
The hall went silent. There had never been a Gryfinndor Black. Sirius got down, nervously walking past the Slytherin table, hearing his older cousins make snarky remarks:
"Auntie Walburga will get him for this!"
"Traitor!"
"Disgrace!"
"Humiliation!"
Sirius tried to ignore them, but he couldn't. They got to him and he just had to hold it in.
Remus was anxious and tense the whole time, fearing that his dead name would be called out. Luckily, it wasn't called, and he was sorted into Gryffindor along with his newly found friends. They later found out that they'd be dorming together; just the 4 of them. This made Remus, of course, a bit nervous about them seeing his private bits or noticing the things he wouldn't do. The first night, just to be safe, he waited until everyone was fast asleep to slip into the bathroom to take off his binder and put on a sports bra and pajamas.
The next morning, nearly all the first years got mail. Remus' mum had sent him extra chocolate, Peter got a letter from his mother and gran, James got a howler yelling,
"WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU SON. CONGRATS ON MAKING GRYFFINDOR. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU!!!"
Sirius' mail dropped in front of him. He knew it was a howler from the envelope, and that it was surely from his mother because it had the Black family crest sealing it. The letter was begging to be opened, nearly tearing at the seams. But Sirius knew it wouldn't be a letter of approval, or anything close to love. Embarrassed and not wanting everyone to really know how his family felt about him, he rushed out of the hall; the letter opening as he got to the corridor. It was his mother's voice screaming out nearly 10x louder than James' letter,
"YOU ARE AN ABOMINATION TO THIS FAMILY SIRIUS ORION BLACK! HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT YOUR FAMILY LIKE THIS! YOU ARE A DISGUSTING HUMILIATION TO THIS FAMILY! AN UTTER WASTE OF SPACE WHO DOESN'T DESERVE TO LIVE WITH OUR SACRED NAME! YOU DESERVE FOR YOUR COUSINS TO HATE YOU BECAUSE YOUR FATHER AND I ALREADY DO! WE WON'T BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU THIS SUMMER AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT COMING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS!!!"
Sirius was shaking and sobbing. The great hall went silent, knowing the broken one was Sirius. Out of the silence came laughter. They laughed at him, at his problems, at how broken he was. He let out a whole new round of sobs. James rushed out of the hall to find Sirius, seeing him sobbing in the hall. He ran over and wrapped him into his arms. Sirius clung to him, James saying,
"Listen, Sirius, you're loved, okay? You're not a humiliation. You deserve to be here. I promise you aren't a waste of space. I love you, okay? And I'm your family now."
Sirius couldn't form the words to say it but knew this boy would be his true brother through it all. He sobbed more, hugging James, silently thanking him. That night, along with every night after, Sirius slept in James' bed, afraid the nightmares would haunt him.
James made him feel safe. Remus began to truly understand what Sirius had gone through and what he continued to endure. However, not wanting to force him to say anything, he simply made sure to give him extra hugs or write him little anonymous notes encouraging him.
Over the year, Remus was able to avoid outing himself by simply never changing in front of his mates for multiple reasons: 1. his scars he was forever having to make excuses for, and 2. he didn't want his roommates to notice that his chest wasn't completely flat or the lack of a bulge in his pants.
