The year began horribly with a brutal full moon. Remus woke up to a bed covered in blood. He was scared and had no idea what was going on. He called frantically,
"Um, Madam Pomfrey, could you please come over here? I think I'm hurt!"
Madam Pomfrey came rushing over, clearly worried. She looked at the blood on his pants and bed, determining that he wasn't hurt, but that he was on his period. She sat down and began,
"Remus, dear, I hate to tell you this, but you've started your period. It means your body is...well, growing. So, every month for about a week, you'll bleed from your privates. Most gir—people use pads. You put them in your pants and help avoid any mishaps or spillage. There is a possibility for it to stop though if you start testosterone at age 15, but that, of course, isn't guaranteed. I will say that I'm very sorry about all this, but you're a strong lad, Remus."
Remus thought that was probably the most embarrassing and dysphoria inducing talk he had ever gotten from Madam Pomfrey. He loathed his life, to say the least. Pads were horrible. Not to mention, they were awfully loud and just gross. The washroom became a panic zone for Remus, who was constantly worried someone would hear his pad opening. He even began to avoid using the toilets with his friends, afraid they would notice the noise, or simply questioning why he never stood up at the urinal, always opting to go into a stall to do his business. Thankfully, if his friends did suspect anything, they never mentioned it; at least not in Remus' presence.
It was a cool Fall afternoon in the dorm when James, Sirius, and Peter came up to Remus saying,
"We know what's going on here!"
Remus panicked. They couldn't know what was really going on, could they????
Sirius exclaimed confidently,
"You're a werewolf!"
"It's the only thing that would explain the scars, the monthly trips to the hospital wing, your eye color, and the fact that you're a bloody giant."
James piped in. Thank Merlin Remus thought he would much rather them know that than his other secret. Hesitantly, he began to say,
"Er, well...I guess you guys guessed it. I'm a dark creature..."
Sirius looked shocked,
"What? No! You're not a dark creature. You're Moony and this doesn't change anything. Alright?"
Sirius said, pulling Remus into a hug.
Both James and Peter reassured him that he was still Remus, that they didn't care he was a werewolf, and that they just wanted to help. Remus couldn't help but smile like an idiot; he had never dreamed his friends would accept him, and yet, they did.
Remus managed to survive for the rest of the year, avoiding detection by any means necessary, and he hoped that 3rd year would be no different.
