The sun shined at it's brightest that afternoon as the two walked to Seonghwa's home from the treat shop they stopped by after school in silence. The two boys were too lost in their thoughts to start up a conversation with each other. Yeosang's mind kept replaying the image of Jongho's disappointed look back in the cafeteria as he gently kicked a small rock on the concrete back and forth.
Was he doing the right thing by choosing Seonghwa over Jongho? But didn't he hurt Jongho by doing the opposite of what they agreed they would do? But Seonghwa was his friend, best friend, they're closer than Yeosang is with Jongho. He doesn't even know Jongho that well, why was he always overthinking his actions? Couldn't he just go along with his choices without hesitating-
"Oh, watch out-" Yeosang's chest was pushed back abruptly by Seonghwa's hand. The two boys came to a stop, causing Yeosang's bag of caramel popcorn to spill onto the ground. The boy pouted and looked up only to find himself face to face with no one other than Wooyoung's new buddy, Choi... What's his name?
"San? Are you okay?" Seonghwa removed his hand from Yeosang's chest and gave him a subtle apology for making him drop his popcorn. The two boys continued to observe San, who happened to be breathing at an unsteady rhythm, face red and sweaty.
"I'm fine," he glanced at the half empty bag of popcorn on the floor, feeling bad. "Here, go get another one, or more," San said as he began to search for something in his side pocket. Yeosang and Seonghwa watched him in confusion until he pulled out a fifty dollar bill and handed it to Yeosang. "I'm sorry, should've watched where I was going." San smiled slightly.
"San, it was just popcorn-" Yeosang began pushing the money back but San shook his head rapidly.
"No, take it, take it. I know you'll use it for good. Money is pointless to me, j-just keep it. Bye," San shoved the now crumbled bill onto Yeosang's palm and jogged away. The older boys watched the strange boy become small then turn to look at each other, shrugging.
"What was that about?" Yeosang asked as the two continued their way to Seonghwa's. He glanced back in the opposite direction of them in reference to his statement, " 'I know you'll use it for good.' What did he mean by that?"
Seonghwa sighed, "It's none of my business, anymore. I just hope he's doing okay-"
"Anymore? You guys knew each other?" Yeosang interrupted.
"It's kinda complicated, Yeo. I rather not talk about it." Seonghwa shook his head. He looked down at his own bag of popcorn, lacking appetite for the sweet and handed it over to Yeosang. "Here, I only had a few." He chuckled.
"Hwa, it's fine. That's your popcorn," Yeosang giggled.
"No, seriously, take it. I don't want it anymore," Seonghwa insisted and pushed the bag towards Yeosang.
"Oh, so now you're giving me your garbage? I knew I'd be a good trash can but damn," Yeosang crossed his arms, closed his eyes and frowned as if in disbelief.
"Come on, you know that's not what I meant," Seonghwa slightly smacked Yeosang on the arm. Yeosang turned back around and pouted, rubbing the place he was hit and began to fake cry. Seonghwa simply rolled his eyes, causing Yeosang to laugh in response and have the elder tag along.
The two boys then locked eyes, both of them feeling their hearts race and butterflies begin to hatch out of their cocoons. The cool breeze became nothing but ghostly brushes against their skin as the two unconsciously began to tilt their bodies to face each other. The world around them was little to no importance as the distance between their blushed faces became smaller and smaller and-
"...you're a fucking dumbass for chasing after someone that clearly doesn't see you the way you do."
"Hwa, I'm sorry," Yeosang looked away from Seonghwa's lips and backed away. "I don't think-"
"No, Yeosang, it's okay." The elder took both of Yeosang's cold hands into his and looked into his eyes once again. "Don't apologize, it's alright." He smiled.
"I just- I didn't think-" Yeosang stumbled upon his words. Seonghwa was about to kiss him. Seonghwa was about to kiss him!? Was he sure he wasn't dreaming at this moment? Why all of a sudden? Seonghwa wasn't going to start using him for favors now, was he?
"Yeosang! It's fine," Seonghwa giggled and brought the boy in for a hug, resting his chin on the boy's fluffy hair. "Don't worry about it. Now come on, my mom's probably wondering what's taking us so long." Seonghwa squeezed the boy once more before he let him go and continued to walk. Yeosang stood in place as he tried to process what had just occurred once more. Was Seonghwa falling for him finally? Or was this one of Seonghwa's tricks like Jongho would've said?
Forget Jongho! This could be your chance to finally admit your feelings!
"I'm coming!" Yeosang called once he snapped out of his thoughts and realized that Seonghwa was about to cross the street. He adjusted his book bag straps and began to jog towards Seonghwa.
Seonghwa could only smile as he thought about how he almost got to kiss Yeosang. At least now he knew Yeosang and him could get somewhere and even make things between them official one day. One of the giant stones that once rested upon his shoulders was suddenly flicked off, only causing his smile to grow more once he saw the younger running towards him.
"Soon," he told himself. "Soon."
