As soon as the bell rang, I was out of that class. I slipped through the back door of advanced science. There were two doors, do to it being a pretty big room. I tried my best to ignore Alana who I knew was right on my trail.
I got to my locker, quickly put in the combo, an stuffed my stuff inside. I grabbed my earbuds and quickly hid my phone in my pocket, thinking Alana wouldn't come. I quickly walked through the crowd of people on my way to the cafeteria. I was about to go over to my empty table at the back, but something tapped my shoulder.
I turned to see Alana behind me, " So Hayden, where do you sit?" she asked. Her lips were pulled up into a perfect smile.
" I sit at the table for the lost, the lonely, and the abandoned, " I said, showing her to my table.
She scanned the empty table. It looked like any other table, except for one thing. This table had a seat that was loose. Every time someone sat on it, they would fall off, " No one sits here," she pointed out.
" Why do you think I called it the lost, the lonely and the abandoned ?" I asked, shrugging my shoulders.
" Well, you need more people to sit here, you cant be alone every day?" She pointed out.
I rolled my eyes, " Listen Alana, Im ok," I sighed, " you dont have to sit wth me, and i dont need any one else to sit with me, " I said, sitting down.
She waited for a minute before sitting down next to me, " so, what d you do during your free time, and hows your family ?" she asked, try to start a conversation.
I hated that question, hows your family ? The only decent person in my family is my mom. I shrugged, " I just, do stuff,"
She rasied an eyebrow, " and your family ?" she asked again.
I sighed, " I have a sister who is 17, her name is Elsa, " I started, " and a mom who looks like an older, female version of me," I slightly grinned, " she is also a physical therapist,"
" And your dad?" She asked.
Great, I hate that question even more, " he is a store owner across the country, and he looks just like my sister, "
" why don't you live with him though ?" she asked.
No way was I telling her how he left my family when I was 3. He ran off with his secret girl friend and her family, and now, I hate any mention of him.
" beacause this is where my mom works, my sisters boy friend lives, and where my docter is, " I said.
" oh, that makes since, " she shruged opening her lunch bag, pulling out a sandwich. She began to eat, before giving me a weird look, " where is your food?" she asked.
" I didn't bring a lunch, my mom only makes so much money, so I don't bring any food from home, or buy the lunch food here, " I said, turning my head away from her.
" What about your dad, you guys should have plenty of money for you to eat,"
I looked her way, " Listen Alana," I started, " I don't want to talk about it," I got up, giving her one last look. I headed out of the cafeteria, towards the nurse. I walked in and told the nurse I didn't feel good.
She pulled out a thermometer and placed it under my tongue. The phone rang so she quickly went to answer it. I then pulled it out and placed it close to the lamp bulb, only getting it up to 100.2 .
I quickly placed it back under my tongue and she came back over, " Im so sorry about that, " she said pulling out the thermometer, " wow, 100, " she said with a worried look, " I will call your mom to come pick you up,"
I shook my head, " no, Its fine, " I started, " I only live on the other street, I can walk, " I told her, "also my mom is in a very Important meeting, I can walk, I know the way, "
" well, at least let me tell her you have a fever," she smiled.
I nodded and went to my locker and grabbed my backpack. I then went through the door and the end of the hallway, and started to walk home.
After about ten minutes of listening to my music, and walking, I found myself at home. I started to jiggle my key through the lock, only to realize to door was unlocked. I pushed open the door, "Hello?" I called.
I walked around the house. No one was in the kitchen, the living room, and not in Elsa or my room. I was glad Elsa didn't skip school again. I then checked the one room that I hadn't checked yet. My mom's.
" Hello?" I asked again.
My mom appeared from her bathroom, " Oh, hey hunny, how was school, I just got a call that you had a fever, " She said, placing her hand on my head.
" Mom, why are you here early ?" I asked.
" oh, I got a break, so," she chuckled, nervously, " Do you want some Starbucks? Lets go!" she said grabbing the keys.
I grabbed my moms hand before she could leave the room, "Mom! What is going on?!" I begged her to answer me.
She took a deal breath, " ok," she looked me in the eye, her green orbs meeting my green ones, " I got fired.."
