Special: Portugal (João Henrique Lisboa-Carriedo) x Reader
Birds chirped happily in the trees outside of the small Portuguese home in Vila Franca do Campo. João sighed in bliss at the quietness that surrounded him. He adored his small home in the village and visited it whenever he needed a break from people. He closed his eyes and leaned back slightly in his chair to enjoy the warmth of the sun on his skin. A knock on his door disturbed his peace and he reluctantly got up from his relaxing spot in his yard. The door opened to reveal a country he knew too well "Why are you here?" (Y/N) winced at his blunt tone, but shook her head and put on a small smile "Ludwig told me to discuss some things with you." João moved out of the way and allowed her to enter his home. She observed her surroundings "What made you come here? I visited your main residence in Lisbon, but your butler told me you were on São Miguel. Then I went to your house in Ponta Delgada, but you weren't there either."
João led her into his private office "I like being here. It's peaceful and nostalgic." She paused in her walking to briefly skim through his history "It used to be the capital, right?" He hummed in affirmation and she followed him into the office. They took their respective seats and (Y/N) launched into the speech Ludwig had prepared for her. João listened to the entire speech and attempted to keep his eyes open. He was a hard worker, but today was his day off, and he wished he could have spent it relaxing. (Y/N) finished the speech and observed him "Do you have any questions?" "Why'd they send you and not Arthur?" João asked, and (Y/N) hesitated at the rude question "Ludwig feared that if he'd sent Arthur, nothing would get done." João smiled slightly at her words and (Y/N) was briefly reminded of the days when he smiled a lot easier "He's always prepared." She merely nodded in reply.
A ticking sound drew his attention and João glanced over at the clock. He turned his green eyes towards her "Would you like to stay for dinner?" She nodded with a smile "Can we....?" He chuckled at the expectant look in her eyes "Yeah we can make them. You can help me. It'll be just like the old days." (Y/N) took quick note of the change of tone at the end of his sentence. He sounded wistful and lost in fond memories. She took his hand in hers and led him to the kitchen "Let's get started." He blinked away the fogginess in his brain and nodded with a content smile "Alright." He instructed her on how to make the dessert while he worked on making their dinner.
The scene reminded him of when the two of them would meet bi-weekly at his home to make pastries and eat dinner together. It reminded him of a time when things weren't so hard.....when the two of them were closer and hadn't been ripped apart by external forces yet. João pushed away his memories and focused on ensuring the food was done properly. (Y/N) paid attention to every word he said and tried her best to focus on the faint accent of his she adored. The tension between the two that had been there for decades seemed to be unfurling the more they conversed. (Y/N) began setting the table as João finished up the last details of his dish.
Moments later, the two were settled comfortably at the dining table. (Y/N) started to cut up her dish "I'm glad to see you doing better. I know times are tough right now for you, but you are your people are doing a good job and are working hard." Heat began to accumulate on his cheeks at the praise. "Obrigado" he muttered quietly, taking a sip of his wine to excuse the faint pink on his cheeks. "Pardon?" She questioned, pausing in cutting her food to look over at him. He smiled softly at her before picking up his utensils "I asked how your food was." "It's fantastic as usual. You always make delicious food" she complimented, popping another piece of the food into her mouth.
João watched her silently before a smile tugged at his lips "Thank you." He leaned on his palm and sent her a teasing smile "Do you think I'm better than Francis then? Arthur certainly believes so." "I think you both specialize in different areas" she easily commented, smiling at him. He hummed in acknowledgement and the two made idle chatter during the rest of the meal. (Y/N) stood at the door with a large box of pastel de natas in her hands "Thank you for the meal." She paused and enveloped him in a quick hug "It was nice to talk to you again." João sent her off with a small smile and watched her leave like she had left a long time ago, however, this time he knew she'd come back.
Notes:
Prompt: Obrigado (Thank you. Masculine version).
He isn't fond of change which is why he's at the old capital. It reminds him of the older days.
He's blunt and lacks a filter, but he can be kind and polite, yet at the same time he's a bit too prideful to apologize for his behaviour.
Pastel de nata = custard tarts
Portugal blackmails Spain for sure (I'm not sure why I wrote this in my notebook, but I'm gonna put this here anyway). Iberian brothers = best brothers
I hope you liked this special.
Next is Turkey
