Russia (Ivan Braginsky) x Reader

Wonderful colours of red and gold and silver decorated the Queen's bedroom. Ivan patiently sat in his designated spot as he listened to (Y/N) hum a familiar tune. Her soothing voice lulled him into a daze as she finished making herself presentable. "Ivan" she softly called out, and he turned to look at her with a dazed smile. "Yes?" She beckoned him over and he faithfully obliged. He kneeled before her, feeling a surge of pride as she smiled softly in approval of his actions "I wanted to promise you something, Ivan." He remained silent but responded with a slight nod. (Y/N) placed a gentle hand upon his shoulder "I promise I'll always take care of you. You as the nation and you as Ivan." She turned her attention back to the mirror as she picked up her hairbrush and began to comb out the knots, signifying she was done speaking. "Thank you" he softly whispered in reply, getting up to leave the room. "Ivan" she called out again, and he stopped at the door to look over at her "Yes?" "I really do mean it" she explained, a small smile decorating her face.

His cheeks warmed at the earnest comment and he bowed once more in gratitude before he exited her room. He silently roamed the halls with no particular direction in mind and found himself gazing out at his nation from his room's balcony. He could hear the distant joyous laughter and cheering from his people as they celebrated their Queen's birthday. It was an odd sight. Ivan hadn't quite grown used to seeing his nation in such a prosperous state, but he knew he wanted it to continue like this forever. Ivan leaned against the railing of the balcony and smiled at his people. He was never an optimistic person, however, he felt everything was going to be okay for now.

A small pounding sensation in his head occupied his thoughts as Ivan made his way towards the court for the meeting. The pounding in his head worsened the closer he got to the shouting voices and he grimaced at the annoyance. He shoved open the court doors and the voices stooped at the sight of their nation. (Y/N) stood from her throne and worriedly rushed over to him "Ivan? What's wrong?" "Nothing. Just a small headache" he replied, glaring at the officials who were whispering about him. She placed gentle hands upon his cheeks and connected their eyes "Go rest up. We'll figure it out by ourselves." He moved to retort, but (Y/N) shook her head and carefully guided him out of the room "We'll be okay. You have to take care of yourself, for the people." Ivan quietly agreed and basked in the warm feeling in his chest from her care.

They paused at the door and she ran a comforting hand through his hair and he unconsciously leaned into her affectionate gesture "I'll come to visit you after we're done. I promise Ivan." He muttered a quiet "okay" and headed towards his room. He collapsed onto his bed and found himself unable to fall asleep. Ivan patiently waited for her to come to visit him, but the doors to his room remained shut throughout the night.

A week later Ivan found himself lying in bed with a fever. His vision blurred and his chest ached every time he took a breath. His people were dying, and he couldn't do anything but lay helplessly in his bed. "(Y/N)" he breathed out, and his servant looked up at the sound of his voice "I need to talk to Her Majesty. My people..." He ignored the pain in his head and in his chest as he shakily pushed himself up to a sitting position. His servant rushed to assist him and Ivan gratefully leaned on them "Please. Get someone to get her." They placed him gently against his pillows and took a step back "I'm afraid unable to do that, sir." Ivan turned his head to the left and glared at them "Why not? It's a national crisis. (Y/N) might not know what's happening, I have to inform her." "Sir we've been ordered to keep you away from Her Majesty" they explained, "She said she didn't want to see you."

Ivan remained quiet as the servant rambled on "In fact, she ordered for you to be placed in the dungeon, however, some members of the court persuaded her otherwise." "My nation" he whispered, "It is her doing, isn't it?" They looked away and nervously wrung the towel in their hands "Yes, sir. I apologize." Ivan gripped his sheets and swallowed his anger "Why?" "She wanted to get rid of the poor and she opted to make them all starve" they stated, stepping back in fear at the look Ivan sent them "She didn't want to spend money on them." Ivan shut his eyes and leaned back in his bed. He remained helpless in his bed and tried to ignore all his people's pain and fear "You promised."
