Janette watched Regina leave and rolled her eyes in irritation.
"Where on earth is the kitchen?" she wondered aloud, her stomach growling with hunger. The last time she had eaten was the previous evening at her wedding reception, but she hadn’t managed much because Rebecca had nagged her about ruining her makeup if she ate more.
She heard footsteps approaching and assumed it was her husband, Mr. Norman, coming to reprimand her for stepping on his ankle.
"Is this how you greet your guests, Mr. Norman?" she muttered, bracing herself for his anger.
To her surprise, Asher wasn’t here to chastise her. Instead, he seemed puzzled by her comment. “Why do you say that?” he asked, his curiosity piqued.
Jane rolled her eyes. “Mr. Norman, I haven’t eaten anything since last night,” she admitted.
She wasn’t embarrassed to share this; hunger was a universal concern.
“So?” Asher’s expression shifted between annoyance and amusement. It was rare for a woman in his circle to speak so directly to him.
“So, I’m hungry,” she replied with irritation.
“Wait, are you planning to starve me to death?” she asked, her voice tinged with frustration. Sometimes, her mind went blank from lack of food, and she couldn’t believe this man might actually let her suffer.
“Are you serious? Mrs. Norman, you’re the most annoying woman I’ve ever met,” Asher muttered, glaring at her. She shot him a defiant look in return.
“Not as annoying as you,” she whispered under her breath.
If she had her own money, she wouldn’t have to beg this arrogant man and could simply eat at a restaurant. Without a job, money, or family to care for her, Janette felt helpless and vulnerable. She resented the Camerons for loving her so much and making her accustomed to comfort. She missed them dearly and felt a wave of sadness. Her appetite vanished as tears threatened to spill.
“Never mind,” she decided, opting to wait until lunch. To avoid showing her tears, she turned and headed towards the stairs.
“Stop,” Asher’s voice stopped her in her tracks.
“Mrs. Norman, first of all, you’re not a guest here; you’re the mistress of this house. You have every right to everything in it, just like I do,” he said, his tone softening slightly.
Conflicted between tears and a smile, Janette’s emotions were in turmoil.
“You can ask Mart to prepare something for you,” he added before she could respond. He turned and walked away, his well-built back disappearing into the distance.
