Jane sat on the balcony, admiring Asher Norman’s sprawling, beautifully landscaped lawn. The green grass looked inviting, but after enjoying a breakfast of pasta and grilled eggs prepared by Mart, she felt too lazy to move. A part of her urged, “Let’s go downstairs,” but her inertia kept her in place.

Mart had been thrilled when Jane requested breakfast, sharing that Asher and his guest typically skipped the morning meal. Jane also learned that Mart only cooked breakfast for Asher’s younger brother, Blake, or his best friend, Hector. This was her first insight into Asher’s family: he had a younger brother, but little was known about his father, who might have died before his mother. Mart’s comments hinted that this loss could explain Asher’s cold and arrogant demeanor.

Jane felt a pang of sympathy for Asher and considered that it might be her responsibility to bring some happiness back into his life. She imagined Asher smiling, kissing her, and making love to her, which made her blush.

A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. “Come in,” she called out, mentally rolling her eyes.

It was Mart. “Jane, Mr. Norman has asked us to pack your luggage. May we go to your closet?”

Jane’s confusion deepened. “Why is he asking us to pack my clothes?”

“Perhaps he’s changing your room,” Mart suggested.

Jane nodded and returned to the balcony.

Hours later, she found herself lying on the bed, confused about how she had ended up there. She glanced at the clock: it was 6:30 PM. She had slept for at least six hours, a result of the lack of distractions like her phone or books. Before her wedding, she used to chat with Erie, but now she felt isolated.

“My life is so boring,” she muttered.

She decided to take an evening shower but was startled when she saw Asher entering the room. A kiss mark was visible on his neck, and his white shirt bore a lipstick stain. His tie was draped over his hand, and his hair was disheveled. It looked like he had been with someone else.

“A cheating husband,” her inner voice shrilled. She felt a surge of anger. If Asher wanted to live this way, why had he married her and disrupted her life?

She was about to confront him but he stormed into the washroom, slamming the door behind him.

If he wasn’t going to follow the rules expected of a husband, why should she?

Jane resolved to live her life on her terms and show Robert Stark that she would not be easily controlled. She murmured to herself about the strange turn her life had taken and went to her closet to retrieve her night clothes.
