You are the most important blessing
God has bestowed upon me.
But I am too ignorant
To understand that...

“My daughter.” Janette stiffened in Asher's arms upon hearing the commanding voice of her so-called father. Asher chose to ignore it.

"He's the last person I want to see," she murmured. Thankfully, Asher either didn't hear or pretended not to.

Asher was observing her every move. "Surprise," his deep voice broke through her thoughts. She shot him a glare, and in return, he smirked at her.

That man had ruined her life, shattered her dreams, and taken away every person she cared about. How could anyone expect her to be happy about seeing him?

"What are you doing here?" she asked Robert Stark, her voice devoid of any emotion.

"Is this how your parents taught you to greet your guest?" Robert replied, though it sounded more like a warning. He was referring to her foster parents, and she clenched her fists at his words.

"Great! I'm trapped here with the two men I hate the most," she muttered to herself.

The presence of both powerful men in the same room made her feel like an outsider. She wasn’t wanted here. They were dressed in clothes that cost three times as much as hers, yet both claimed to be the most important men in her life.

"We're going to be away from the city for at least a month, so I thought I'd surprise you by inviting your father," Asher informed her. I was too naive to think that Asher Norman could be a friend. I hate him with all my heart after this stunt.

He's so clueless. Even when my father—Robert Stark—was present on the day of my wedding, I chose to walk down the aisle with my supposed cousin. And yet he behaves as if everything is perfectly fine.

“See, learn something from my son-in-law,” Robert Stark chimed in before Janette could muster a response. She glared at Asher, giving him a look that screamed, You could have at least asked me first, but he chose to ignore it, securing his place in her bad books alongside Robert Stark.

“I don’t have anything new to share with you, Mr Sta—” she trailed off, remembering this man claimed to be her father. Asher didn’t know about their complicated relationship, and Stark wouldn’t forgive her if she gave her husband even the slightest hint.

“I mean, Father,” she corrected herself.

Robert Stark maintained a bored expression, while Asher looked sceptical. “Mr Norman, I had a fight with my daughter before your wedding, and she still won’t forgive her poor old man,” Robert Stark lamented. Janette scoffed quietly but quickly masked it before either of them noticed.

He's such a great actor; someone should suggest he start a career in films. She folded her arms and glared at him. “What does he hope to achieve?”

“This marriage was arranged, Father, and we don’t have the kind of relationship newlyweds normally have,” Janette stated bluntly, without shying away from the truth. Both men looked at her in surprise.

She wasn’t the type to let any man intimidate her or silence her voice, and nobody else dared speak to these two the way she did. Janette realised this when she noticed Asher’s mistress and one of the maids eavesdropping, their expressions a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

“You ought to have taught your daughter how to speak properly and know her place,” Asher muttered, rolling his eyes.

"She's so spoiled," he continued.

That didn’t sit well with Janette. “Mr Norman, perhaps you should also consider your words before speaking.”

“Shut up, young lady,” Stark interjected. “Don’t test Mr Norman's patience. Were it someone else in your position, he wouldn’t have tolerated it.”

“You're both impossible,” she muttered, turning to leave. But Asher caught her hand to stop her.

“Mrs Norman, as my wife, it’s your duty to entertain my guest, whether you like it or not,” he murmured, and she glared at him.

I never begged you to be your wife, she wanted to spit in his face, but one glance at his handsome face, and her anger dissipated.

Stark had been smirking the whole time, believing that this dangerous man, known as Asher Norman, would put this girl in her place.

She shrugged. “Mart, bring some drinks for these two men.”

“No need for that, Mr Norman,” Stark cut in. “I came to see my daughter, but since she isn’t willing to speak with me, I think I’ll take my leave.” Janette rolled her eyes.

“You should have thought of that before you spoiled her,” Asher muttered.

If only you knew, Mr Norman. You wanted a wife, and you got her. This man wanted something in exchange for his daughter, and he got it. But what about me? I only wished for my ambitions to come true. Because of their cruel games, I lost everything. And by everything, I mean everything.
