When Jane entered the closet, she accidentally bumped into a suitcase, causing the clothes she had packed from Robert Stark’s house to spill out. It looked as if she were going on vacation.
She sighed and began neatly repacking her clothes. She disliked messes, and given Asher's obsession with cleanliness, she preferred everything in order.
“Why did he ask Mart to pack my clothes along with his?” Jane wondered aloud, rolling her eyes. “I’m not going anywhere with that jerk,” she muttered to herself as she grabbed her nightdress.
She decided to change in the guest washroom. After a long, soothing shower, she returned to the bedroom, only to find Asher lounging on his side of the bed. He wore a casual black T-shirt and sweats, his hair still damp from a shower. The T-shirt clung to his muscles, making him look even more handsome.
“Why, God? Why did you make my enemy so handsome?” she lamented. Asher faked a cough, drawing her attention. She thought he might have noticed her checking him out, so she quickly shifted the topic to avoid embarrassment.
“What’s going on with the suitcases, Mr. Norman?” Jane asked, unable to hold back her curiosity.
“Why did you order Mart to pack my clothes?” she continued, noticing he was focused on his laptop and ignoring her.
“Who looks so handsome while working?” Jane wondered but quickly dismissed the thought. She was frustrated by his silence and his apparent lack of response.
Placing her hands on her hips, she bit her lip—a habit she had when annoyed. “I asked you something, Mr. Arrogant.”
He didn’t look up from his screen, and his lack of response only irked her further. “Are you deaf?” she demanded. This time, he groaned in annoyance.
“Can you stop being so annoying?” he muttered, glaring at her.
“You know, marrying you was the worst decision of my life,” he said.
“And I curse the day you made that decision,” she retorted, her tone matching his. “Thank God you realized your mistake.”
“You act like I forced you into this marriage,” he snapped. “I didn’t drag you down the aisle. As far as I remember, you were perfectly capable of walking.”
His harsh words cut deep, and Jane wanted to tell him that if circumstances had been different, she wouldn’t have married him. She would have left him at the altar. But the words stuck in her throat. His insensitivity hurt more than he could know.
“You're a jerk,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. She stormed out of the room, her tears not escaping his notice.
Asher was puzzled by her reaction. He wondered what he had said to make her so upset. Despite his plan to hurt her, a part of him felt uneasy seeing her so distressed. He struggled with his own conflicting feelings but tried to focus on his work.
He planned to reveal later that they were going to Canada for their honeymoon. However, the trip was a cover for a business deal and a chance to showcase his wife to potential investors, all while bolstering his tarnished image.
