Hoseok stared at his two dongsaengs, with dark, serious eyes. The two of them were both seated tensely on the log opposite to his own, looking both ready to listen and to finally know what was going on, at the same time as they looked terrified to know that exactly what it was that had made them end up in the current state. As runaway male omegas.
It was an odd situation Hoseok had to admit. Usually he would be the one trying to lighten up a mixed mood like this. Cracking a silly joke or smile brightly. The situation at hand was nothing at all like those times though. The grim expression of seriousness on his face enhanced the importance of the story he was about to tell. He sighed, he would've never guessed it would be him who was going to be the one to share this story. Yoongi had always been adamant on being the one to tell them.
Unfortunately Yoongi wasn't here and he was the only one who knew the truth that the two others deserved to be a part of. He straightened his back, preventing the slumping that his backless seat on the wooden log caused, and with a deep exhale he started.
"We are not safe." He had said it in a whisper. It wasn't the most reassuring beginning, but maybe so, the most important one. He should wish he could have spoken up and louder to make sure that the two younger omegas didn't miss a word, but he did not yet have the might to speak the secret that he had Yoongi had kept between them for years. Even amongst themselves they had never mentioned the story since Jimin had arrived at the school.
From the terrified expression on Jimin's face to judge, there was no need for him to speak above his whisper. The two younger omegas had clearly heard him, even over the wind blowing in the rustling trees.
"Yeah," Namjoon had replied after a while, his words just as quiet as Hoseok's had been, "I kinda figured." He added, not at all helping the terrified Jimin sitting next to him with big eyes. Namjoon was now no longer making eye contact with the two and was instead watching a piece of bark blowing away on the dirt beneath them.
"But Yoongi hyung always told us about how great it would be out here. To be free." Jimin cried desperately, already sounding like he was on the verge of shedding tears.
"He is not wrong." Hoseok told him, folding his hands. "But there is too much freedom. In the schools, despite the system being fucked, we were always protected. We had guards watching us 24/7 who's sole duties were to protect us, no matter how crap of a job they did. We had a roof over our head and had walls around us that would keep us away from all threats and dangers. We were offered free education, free food and free relationships with others of our subgender. Now that we have escaped, we have stripped ourselves of all the privileges we had, we are no longer protected and are no longer in the hands of the system or of the government, the only ones who put up rules to ensure our safety." Jimin whimpered at the words. He had never thought about it like that before. How could he possibly have when Yoongi had always spoken of it with a sparkle in his eyes and a smile on his lips?
"But I don't blame him for believing that. Not at all. There even was a period where I shared his ideology of this world being the freedom we have always wished for. I feel no resentment for his choice to escape. He was desperate and had the right to be. But Yoongi has never been selfish and as he tried to run away from his fate, he helped us pull away from ours too." His folded arms clenched to the point where his knuckles turned white, and he had to clear his throat before he continued. "I know what our fate would have been if we had stayed and to be honest, I can't decide which outcome is better." Now both of the other two stared at him. Their eyes boring so hard into him that he had to readjust in his seat. "Yoongi was already in distress about his birthday coming up, the fact that he was sold was just the cherry on top in his desperate situation."
Hoseok sighed heavily, already feeling the weight of his unsaid words on his shoulders.
"You see, when me and Yoongi were the only male omegas in the school, before the two of you came along, we overheard something that we aren't supposed to know. Nobody other than the higher ups knows of this. Neither male nor female omegas are aware. Except me and Yoongi that is ."
