Chapter One

"You've broken the rules 6 times already! I just can't look the other way again."

"I thought we were tight, Herb?"

Elena didn't know how long she had spent tracking down Five. The Commission could literally send you anywhere in time so the concept of time had gone out the window. She honestly didn't know how long she had been there.

Elena had been tracking Five for a long time now but still didn't have a single lead. But if anything could find him, it would be the Infinite Switchboard. She had been monitoring it for God knows how long trying to find any anomaly in the timeline that could have been created by Five. The only problem, she wasn't qualified to use the Infinite Switchboard. And was made sure she knew that fact every time she tried to.

"Look, Herb," Elena called as she strode down the corridor heading to the Infinite Switchboard only to find one of the top analysts, Herb, blocking her path, "I don't have time for this today."

"I'm sorry, Elena," he said, fumbling slightly with his words as Elena strode right up to him and stared him down, using how much taller she was than him to her advantage to try and intimidate him into letting her pass, "You don't have a time slot booked, there's nothing I can do."

Elena shifted her weight onto her left foot and cocked her hip out, folding her arms and staring Herb down with a hard stare.

"And you've broken the rules 6 times already!" Herb continued, taking a precautionary step back from her, "I just can't look the other way again."

"I thought we were tight, Herb," Elena said, looking disappointedly down at Herb, who looked at the floor and stammered, trying to say something in return but being unable to.

"Listen, Herb," Elena continued, unfolding her arms to look less intimidating, "We've all got jobs to do. We've all been assigned some very important things to keep the timeline going as it should. If one of us fails their assignment, don't we all fail?" she asked, looking earnestly down at him. Herb looked up at her and sighed and nodded slowly.

"If one of us can't maintain their designated part of the timeline, then the whole timeline is affected," Elena continued, "If one of us needs to use the Infinite Switchboard, then we all need to use the Infinite Switchboard."

Herb seemed to ponder Elena's words for a while. Neither of them said anything as Elena hoped Herb wouldn't question her terrible logic.

"I've been trying to get a lead for years, Herb, years!" Elena continued when Herb didn't dispute her, "And I am so close! So freaking close! I just need to use the switchboard one more time. Once more, Herb. Once. And then I can maintain my section of the timeline and then we all get a win. Don't you want a win, Herb? Don't you want to win?"
