Reaching for the Moon

Pha watched Yo make friends with everybody at the Moons and Stars practice. They all smiled and talked to him like they'd known each other for years. Even the seniors smiled at him indulgently, like a sweet little brother that needed to be protected.

He told himself he wasn't jealous as he forced himself to wait for Yo to notice him after their practice ended. It was taking too long, they'd been done for three minutes and Yo was still saying goodbye. Pha paced back and forth. Definitely not jealous.

"Waiting for your boyfriend?" Beam asked, rolling his eyes. Pha wanted to say yes, but it occurred to him yet again that he hadn't even taken Yo on a date.

"Can he be considered a boyfriend if you haven't gone on a date or asked him to be yours?" Pha asked.

"Well he let you push his friend away and hold onto him like a greedy giant," Beam said, laughing at his friend. "My guess is that if you asked, he would probably say yes."

A smile broke out on Pha's face as he considered Beam's words, hoping that was true. Yo and Ming walked out of the practice room together.

"Do you want me to take you to your dorm, Yo?" Pha asked, as soon as Yo was within speaking distance.

"Sure, but what about your friends?" Yo asked. "Didn't they come with you?"

"I have my car," Ming volunteered quickly, eyeing Kit. "I'll give them a ride."

"Thanks," Pha said, grabbing Yo's bag and trying to pull him to the car. He didn't even bother to make sure it was okay with his friends. They were adults, they could take care of themselves.

"Wait, Mau might want a ride," Yo said, watching as the sleek black cat sauntered into view. It looked at the group of boys and then jumped daintily on a table near Yo.

The two friends looked at each other for a moment, and then Yo nodded his head, "She's going to take a walk. She'll meet me later."

"How do you know?" Kit asked, narrowing his eyes at the strange sight.

"She just told me, silly," Yo said, laughing at Kit's skepticism. Pha wasn't really used to people acting like animals could speak but he wasn't willing to argue with Yo about it. Ignoring the other's reactions, Yo turned to Pha and said, "Take me home."

This sweet sentence had the immediate effect of turning Pha's legs to jelly and making his heart feel like it might pound out of his chest for the second time today. On the drive home, both men sat quietly. One scared to talk, afraid that he would wake up and find this was a dream, and the other enjoying a few moments of silence after a day filled with people and activity.

"Are you hungry?" Pha asked before they arrived at the dorm. "Would you like to go out to eat?"

"No, thank you, I have food in my room," Yo replied, but before Pha could feel upset he asked, "Would you like to join me?"

"Yes!" Pha said, grateful that he wasn't rejected outright.

The two walked up the stairs and into Yo's room. When he walked in the door, Yo said, "I'm home." Pha immediately looked around the room, wondering who Yo might be talking to, but there was no one else there. He saw a welcoming, well-kept apartment with a small cat bed and dishes near the balcony. It was one of the larger rooms, specifically designed for couples who had larger beds and needed a kitchen.

"Do you have a roommate?" Pha asked, suddenly worrying that Yo might already have a lover.

"Yes, of course," Yo said, smiling as he indicated the cat bed. "Mau lives with me."

Pha took a deep breath, releasing the terrible tension that built up in his stomach when he'd thought Yo might already be taken. He knew that Yo might still have someone special in his life, but at least he wasn't living with anyone else. The thought that Yo probably would not have allowed Pha to hold him at all if he had a lover never crossed Pha's mind.

"Why don't you sit down on the couch while I get lunch started?" Yo asked, putting his bag on the desk where he kept his laptop and school books. "Would sandwiches be okay with you, or would you prefer something else?"

"I'm fine with anything," Pha said, sitting down to wait.

"I should have asked before I gave you peanut butter cookies," Yo said, washing his hands in the sink, "but do you have any allergies?"

"No, I'm not allergic to anything," Pha answered. He stared at Yo from his seat on the couch, watching as the man walked around the kitchen, clearly at ease. After about ten minutes, Pha was called to sit at a small dining table. He found a plate with a beautiful looking hoagie sandwich, cut into halves, and a glass of ice water. When Yo sat down, Pha took a bite. The sandwich had grilled chicken breast, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, sliced avocado, and some kind of sauce. It was amazing.

"How did you make this so quickly?" Pha asked, mouth still half full of food.

"Well I'd already made the chicken a few nights ago for dinner, so I just heated it up. I keep pesto in my fridge, and everything else was just cutting vegetables," Yo said, happily eating his own lunch. "I hope you don't mind drinking water, I don't drink soda or alcohol."

"Why not?" Pha asked. He really didn't care, he just wanted to know everything about Yo.

"Well, I love pink milk, but I don't have any here," Yo replied. "I don't really like any sodas and I don't have any alcohol tolerance. I don't want to be drunk, so I just stay away from that altogether. Does that bother you?"

"Nothing you do could bother me," Pha said before he had a chance to consider his words.

Pha's words made Yo look up at him with a shy smile, his cheeks turned an adorable shade of pink. Pha cleared his throat, reminding himself that it wouldn't be okay to grab Yo and start kissing those amazing lips. Trying to focus on his delicious sandwich, Pha looked down and smiled.

They talked for a few minutes, sharing shy smiles. Pha was staring at Yo's sweet face. Today was the best day he'd had in a long time and he didn't want to let the reason for that slip away. Without thinking, he said what was in his heart, "I want you to be my boyfriend."

Author's Note: Sorry! Leaving it on a cliffhanger and it's a shorter than normal chapter. I have reasons! Mostly that I barely have time to write, but the other one is that it was the perfect place to leave the story because the next chapter has some important information and I need time to make it just right. I hope you're enjoying the story. Love!
